It was a war that contained victories for communism and for democracy some were fought with guns, others were fought with diplomacy, but no conflict was the same as The Korean War. In the north the USSR was establishing a communist government and the United States was encouraging a democratic government. But the bulk of the Korean people stilled wanted independence and were enraged at that arrangements agreed upon by the USSR and the United States. Riots and protests became common within Korea as the natives grew tired of thirty-five years of foreign occupation. Both the United States and United Nations called for a democratic election within Northern and Southern Korea in 1948. Though the North didn’t partake in the election; the twice as populated South did. The joint-commission, established by the Russians and Americans was now replaced by UNTCOK (United Nations Temporary Commission on Korea) in the South. The anti-communist and American-supported Syngman Rhee was elected to lead this temporary government. In turn the communist government, in the North, chose Kim II-sung as lead in 1948 due his political proficiency and his readiness to take out any opposition to the communist government. Ships that could be used in Korea were sent to help protect Twain since there was a threat that China might attack the island nation. Also in Korea the first American involvement was a divesting lose at the hands of the North Koreans and the retreat to Taejeon that followed. By August of 1950 the UN coalition only maintained control on an area a one tenth of the Korean peninsula’s over size; this area would later be called the Pusan Peninsula. Due to Operation Chromite; however the American and South Korean forces were able to land a large amount of soldiers beyond enemy lines and send the North Koreans in a mass retreat. The success of Operation Chromite and resistance of American forces at the Pusan Peninsula left the North Korean forces weakened, Seoul back in South Korean hands, and gave the perfect chance to push the North Koreans farther back within their own
