1st Klan: 1865-1870s
2nd Klan: 1915-1944
3rd Klan: since 1946
1. The Ku Klux Klan was created in1865-1866.
It was established during a meeting in Pulaski, Tennessee, by six former well-educated Confederate officers, including the famous Nathan Bedford Forrest, who later became its first leader.
2. The Klan adopted their name from the Greek word kuklos.
The word means, "circle" in Greek.
3. The Klan officially disbanded in 1869.
From 1868-1870, federal troops withdrawn from the South and the Klan was dominated by rougher elements of the society, who didn't believe in the Klan's doctrine but were psychos that found joy in killing innocent people. Grand Wizard Nathan Bedford Forrest felt that the Klan was getting corrupt, and officially disbanded it in 1869. Local organizations, known as Klaverns, however, continued to act on their own, calling and considering themselves members of the Klan.
4. The most common method used by the Klan to intimidate was burning crosses. …show more content…
The concept of the burning cross was to spread the light of Christ into the world of ignorance (more realistically, spread the light of white superiority into the world of "ignorant" blacks).
However, when cross burnings didn't stop, civil rights activists, the Klan went on to beatings and public whippings. Lynchings were usually used on blacks. Often, big groups of people would take part in lynching, ranging from teenagers to eighty-year-old hardcore racists. After the lynchings, the mob proudly posed for pictures with the victim still hanging from the tree. Many such pictures were displayed in public places in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia until the late forties and early fifties. Genital mutilation was basically a thing unheard of in the long list of Klan
atrocities.
5. The leader of the KKK was called Grand Wizard of the Empire.
A convention signed in 1867 designated the Klan as an Invisible Empire and provided for a supreme official, called Grand Wizard of the Empire, who wielded total power and was assisted by ten Genii. Other important officials of the Klan were the Grand Dragon of the Realm, who was assisted by eight Hydras, the Grand Titan of the Dominion, assisted by six Furies, and the Grand Cyclops of the Den, assisted by two Nighthawks.
6. Kleagles were the individuals, responsible for recruiting potential Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members.
Kleagles, as defined by the Ku Klux Klan: An Encyclopedia, were organizers or recruiters, “appointed by imperial wizard or his imperial representative to ‘sell’ the KKK among non-members”. [1]These members were paid typically by commission and received a portion of each new member’s initiation fee.[ Recruitment of new KKK members entailed framing economic, political and social structural changes in favor of and in line with KKK goals.
7. The robes resemble those worn by medieval Catholic penitents, and some of the regalia looks Catholic.
8. The only Klan Grand Wizard to hold a position in a state legislature was David Duke.
He was elected to the Louisiana House of Representative in 1989. Membership in the Klan decreased during the late eighties and early nineties. In 1989, the estimated membership was 5000. A branch was opened in Toronto, Canada in 1980. The Klan no longer uses lynchings or other types of mob violence; they've resorted to peaceful demonstrations. To this day, however, they are working for white supremacy in the United States of America - a nation they claimed was built by the whites and should remain of the whites and for the whites.
