Kudler Fine Foods has three retail stores in California located in Del Mar, La Jolla, and Encinitas. The website contains basic information about the stores featured in the categories of “Bakery”, “Meat & Seafood”, “Produce”, “Cheese & Dairy”, and “Wine”. The Kudler Fine Foods website also has five informational categories that include “News”, “About”, “Locations”, “Survey”, and “Terms & Conditions”. A critique of the website is made by reviewing design and layout of the site.

The visual design of a website relates to the curb appeal of a site.
“Visual elements such as color, layout, typography, and images shape a sites personality or voice” (McIntire, 2008, p. 2) thus the design must be appealing in order to lure visitors to the site. There are several characteristics that are included in the design of a website including color, layout, graphics, fonts, input forms, and navigation. After reviewing the Kudler site, the rotating graphics gives the site a focusing affect.
A review of the site displays very dull colors. The simplicity of the site leaves much to the customer’s imagination. This may drive the customer to leaving the site without important information about Kudler Fine Foods. By increasing the displays and graphics, Kudler Fine Foods can better highlight the important features and services of the site. Using stylized graphics and colors, a website can draw attention to important features they want customers to be sure to look at.
Layout
The layout of a website must appear organized; with a consistent theme or voice. The Kudler site has the food selection navigation at the top of the page with the company information depicted by menus located under the image frame near the middle of the page. The menus should be located on the left side of page to better locate them. The company information links could be combined with the food selection menu into one single navigation bar with drop down menus under the navigation headings to consolidate the information. Kudler Fine Food’s should also update their copyright information to reflect the present year. The placement of the terms Internet/ Intranet as links appear awkward because it is above the name of the company. This gives focus to the links and not the content. According to McIntyre (2008), “Menus are the “meat and potatoes” of navigation (pg. 103).
The name of the company is too small and should be increased in size in order highlight to the customer what website they are viewing. Kudler should consider condensing the history of the company under the “About” tab. Visitors may not take the time to read all of the information if information does not appear to be logical. The links for locations use Yahoo Maps but do not clearly show the locations of the stores on the map. Kudler Fine Foods should consider using Google Maps for a more detailed location as well as the added feature of “Street View” to make their locations more visible to website visitors.
