Guiding Question

The over-arching question trying to be answered is will the Law of Conservation of Matter be violated if popcorn kernels are popped and the popcorn weighs less than the same kernels in the un-popped state? .

Purpose

To determine whether the Law of Conservation of Matter can be violated when you pop popcorn kernels and the form of the popcorn kernels changes to popped popcorn.

Hypothesis

If the popcorn kernels pop and weigh less after it is popped, then the Law of Conservation of Matter will be violated.

Materials

One Hot Plate 20 Popcorn Kernels One 400 ml Beaker One pair of Beaker Tongs One pair of Heat Resistant Gloves One Pair of Safety Googles One Watch Glass with a 5 cm radius

Independent Variable – The kernels of corn that change into popcorn. Control Variable – The beaker and the scale. Controlled Variable – The mass of corn kernels because during the experiment the mass is compared before and after. Controlled Group – The number of kernels. The same number of corn kernels were used each time. Experimental Group – Each of the seven times that the experiment was conducted. There was not a significant difference between the Initial Mass and Final Mass of the seven groups. Of the seven groups, only one group (group 1) had a higher mass after the experiment steps were followed. The other six groups had a lower final mass after the experiment steps were followed. This outcome is not what I expected.

There were several possible sources of error in this experiment.

Temperature of the flame was not measured, so it was not possible to determine if the flame temperature varied during the experiment. A varied flame temperature could affect the time it takes the corn kernels to pop. In the future, a burner with a temperature gauge could be used.

The room temperature was not taken into account. It is possible that room temperature could affect how long it takes kernels to pop. To determine the room temperature, the experiment could be conducted in a room at 68 degrees, a room at 72 degrees and a room at 75

In experiment one, involving the rate of respiration of germinated peas when exposed to a variety of different temperatures. From a general standpoint the data collected matched the hypothesis formed, as the temperature increases the rate of respiration will increase as well. This was shown as the average ppm of oxygen was taken from each group. Comparing the data from the class is shows the effect of human error on the results. For example group #4 seemed to have back wards results this may have been due to an improper seal on the oxygen sensor.…

    - Each liquid that was used in Part I has its own independent density. Density being the relationship between the mass and volume of a substance. In this portion of the lab we explored relative density, each liquid compared to the others. The corn syrup was the most dense, in comparison to the other liquids. Whereas the vegetable oil was the least dense compared to the other liquids. The liquids in between followed this same principle in their respective orders.…

After researching, I found two studies that are similar to my experiment. One study by Sean Boyd (2007) tested to see which brand of microwave popcorn yielded the least amount of un-popped kernels. Mr. Boyd tested five brands of butter flavored microwave popcorn: Aldi, Act II, Orville Redenbacher, Jolley Time and Pop-Secret. His experiment proved his hypothesis partially wrong. Mr. Boyd hypothesized that Orville Redenbacher would be the best and Aldi's would be the worst. His experiment proved that Act II produced the least amount of un-popped kernels while Aldi's did have the most un-popped kernels on average.…

This scientific experiment is to gauge the amount of kernels popped when the storage temperatures of the kernels are changed. Does freezing popcorn kernels for 24 hours yield more or less popped kernels than popcorn kernels stored at room temperature? By performing this experiment we can decide how to maximize our food potential. We will purchase six identical brands of popcorn from the local food store that have the same ingredients, weight and brand name. We will take three of the bags of popcorn kernels and store it in a standard household freezer for twenty four hours. The temperature of the freezer will remain at a constant rate of temperature. The other identical bags of popcorn kernels will be stored on a cabinet shelf and remain at a constant room temperature.…

The aim of this experiment was to find the favoured temperature for types of micro-organisms to grow. The hypothesis was sort of rejected in this experiment as our rule of thumb didn’t add up to the results we got. If we could make our results more accurate, we could have supported our hypothesis but as the results were inaccurate, we could not prove that our hypothesis was correct. Overall this experiment went well even though there were some difficulties and problems that occurred which altered our…

No bag of popcorn yields 100% of popcorn. There are always kernels left over. It’s the amount left over that is important. I think most people would prefer to have less kernels left over than more. This lead me to try this experiment and see which brand had the highest yield of fully popped kernels. I also wanted to test and see whether a more expensive brand would produce more popped kernels over a cheaper brand.…
