Why Doesn T All The Popcorn Pop?
Problem
Why doesn’t all the popcorn pop?
Purpose
The purpose was to see why doesn´t all the popcorn pop and how can all the popcorn pop. The impact this experiment could have is that people will know how to make all the popcorn pop, all the factors that can help popcorn pop and which materials you will need to make all the popcorn pop.
Hypothesis
If I change the type of oil then more popcorn will pop.
Materials
- 1 bottle of Canola oil
- 1 bottle Vegetable oil
- 1 bottle of Corn oil
- 1 pan
- 1 bottle of popcorn
- 1 burner
- 9 plastic bags
Procedures
1. Divide the bottle of popcorn in groups of 150 kernels
2. Preheat the pan in the burner which each Oil every time 2 minutes
3. Pour the first group of kernels in the pan with each type of oil
4. Cook for 4 minutes
5. Place the popped-popcorn and non-popped-popcorn in a bowl and put information in the bowl – type of oil used, #number of popcorn pop, # of not popcorn pop
6. Analyze data from the 9 trials
- Make graphs for each Oil
7. See if the results support my hypothesis
Results

Which leaves with an average of 97.5% of kernels popped. For the canola oil in the first trial 149out of 150 kernels popped, in the second trial 148 out of 150 kernels popped and in the last trial 149 out of 150 kernels popped. That means an average of 99.06% of kernels popped. For the vegetable oil, in the first trial 147 out of 150 kernels popped, for the second trial 146 out of 150 kernels popped and for the last trial all the kernels popped 150 out of 150. Vegetable oil had an average of 98.43%. The type of oil that popped the most kernels was the canola

After researching, I found two studies that are similar to my experiment. One study by Sean Boyd (2007) tested to see which brand of microwave popcorn yielded the least amount of un-popped kernels. Mr. Boyd tested five brands of butter flavored microwave popcorn: Aldi, Act II, Orville Redenbacher, Jolley Time and Pop-Secret. His experiment proved his hypothesis partially wrong. Mr. Boyd hypothesized that Orville Redenbacher would be the best and Aldi's would be the worst. His experiment proved that Act II produced the least amount of un-popped kernels while Aldi's did have the most un-popped kernels on average.…

    Flaming Hot Cheetos

Cheetos are cornmeal snacks with a variety of different flavors. Invented in 1948 by Charles Elmer Doolin, who owned Frito Lay. In the experiment we will be using Flaming Hot Cheetos. A crunchy but yet spicy little snack. In a bag of Flamin Hot Cheetos, Frito Lay’s states it has 160 cal per 28 grams (fritolay.com). Using the cheetos we will record the mass of each cheetos used in each trial using a scale. Once we have calculated each cheetos mass we will record it on a chart. After measuring each cheetos we will then begin the experiment by first putting 20 ml of water in each tube. Then we will place the thermometer and record the start temperature of each trial. Then we will place the tube to the flame with different height differences with each trial (2 in, 3 in, and 4 in). When each reaction is placed we will then record the highest temperature the water heated too. Then we will measure the the cheeto and record the after reaction mass. Then using the nutritional value 160 cal per 28 grams we will use the equation (accepted - experimental divided by accepted multiplied by 100) to get the percent error. We think that our percent error will be relatively lower, and our hypothesis will be…

In Sean Boyd’s experiment, he used six different types of brand Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn, Aldi’s “Corntown”, Act II, Jolly Time, and Pop Secret. He microwave for 2 minutes and 415 seconds. (Boyd, 2015) He thought the more expensive popcorn would have the lesser amount of un-popped kernels, and the less expensive would have the most un-popped kernels. But…

In both articles, the experimenters were trying to decide which brand of popcorn produced the lowest yield of unpopped popcorn. The Popcorn and College Students describes any broken kernel as popped and any intact kernels as unpopped (Saum, DeLap, Skinner, & Galli, 2003). Tammie Mason’s experiment however gives much more concise direction and describes the mathematics she used to obtain the data (Mason, 2011). Both experiments use the method of counting the kernels to determine a percentage (Mason, 2011) (Saum, DeLap, Skinner, & Galli, 2003). This is the method I will use for my experiment.…

Two brand name popcorn packages are being tested. Act II and Orvill Redenbacher. Both are tested in the same microwave. The same time is being used (2.5 Minutes). Both packages were weighed before and after the popping procedure, the results were recorded. Total cooking time was measured and recorded for both popcorn packages. 10 randomly selected popped kernels from each package were measured with a ruler and results were recorded. Average size for both were calculated and recorded. All un-popped kernels were collected from each package and weighed in a dish. The weight of the dish was subtracted from the total weight to find the weight of un-popped kernels from each brand. The percentage was calculated and compared.…

No bag of popcorn yields 100% of popcorn. There are always kernels left over. It’s the amount left over that is important. I think most people would prefer to have less kernels left over than more. This lead me to try this experiment and see which brand had the highest yield of fully popped kernels. I also wanted to test and see whether a more expensive brand would produce more popped kernels over a cheaper brand.…

The materials that were used throughout this experiment consisted of different brands of potato chips, graph paper, a rolling pin and sunlight. The first step was to find the serving size listed on the back of the bag of chips, write down the serving size on a notepad. Next find the total fat per serving for each brand of chips in the grams. Count out a number of chips equal to the serving size for that brand of chips. Next place the chips on a sheet of graph paper. Roll over the chips several times with a rolling pin. Remove the graph paper and tape the graph paper to a window.…

My science experiment is identifying the best method for making the most delicious cookie. If I vary the amount of time I refrigerate the cookie dough, then the batch that was freshly baked will be moister and ultimately taste better because the wet ingredients will not have been absorbed yet. To perform this experiment I will need to use three medium sized mixing bowls, an electric mixer, measuring spoons and measuring cups to correspond to the recipe, plastic wrap to cover the refrigerated cookie dough, a refrigerator, a standard sized cookie sheet, an oven, two wire cooling racks, four large Glad brand tupperware, ten taste testers, ten questionnaires and pens, graph paper for recording the data. This experiment will require me to bake four different batches of cookies: two batches of chocolate chip cookies, and two batches of sugar cookies. I will not vary the ingredients of the batches, however I will vary the procedure in which I make the dough. For the sugar cookies, I will make one batch of dough (Sugar A) and refrigerate it for 48 hours. I will also make one batch of dough for the chocolate chip cookies (Chocolate A) and refrigerate it for 48 hours. After the 48-hour period is over, I will the make the remaining two batches (Sugar B and Chocolate B) and immediately bake them. After those two batches are finished I will bake batches Sugar A and Chocolate A. I will then store them in separate, labeled containers and conduct a blind taste test with ten people. I will have my subjects taste Sugar A and Sugar B first and have them record which cookie they prefer and why, then I will have them taste Chocolate A and Chocolate B and have them record which the prefer and why.…

In addition to the major influences on costs of production associated with Delta, economies of scale are also relevant to this firm. Economies of scale operate to the left of Q* or the minimum efficient scale of operations according to class lecture notes. So it is in firms best interest to expand and operate at a more efficient level. Delta is a Legacy Airline; because Delta is one of the larger airlines Delta’s costs are expensive in terms of operation. According to lecture notes from class, economies of scale are characterized by the specialization and division of labor, technological or financial factors. Economies of scale occur when the long-run average total cost declines as output increases.…
