LSM 499 Captone Project Report
Title for your proposed topic or project for LSM 499: Are dermatologic health disparities experienced by people of color caused by cultural barriers or dermatologists incompetency? Description of the topic or project, including a statement of its significance and your reasons for selecting it: My idea for the Capstone Project is to research health disparities in dermatology based on race. I will show evidence of the mistrust of dermatologist among people of color, and evidence of lack of preparation of dermatologists to skin conditions in people of color. After that, I will discuss how these factors negatively impact the outcomes of the treatment of people of color with dermatological conditions, and will attempt to identify which factor …show more content…
The topic is relevant because there is a large gap between what can be offered by medicine and what is actually offered to people of color. Investigating the reasons for the existence of health disparities allow for the proposal of solutions to reduce them. The format the project will take: The project will take the shape of a research paper. The outcomes and/or objectives of the project (what your project will accomplish, demonstrate, or prove): Through my project, in particular, I intend to analyze two issues: the social issue (people of color distrusting their dermatologists and avoiding treatment) and the healthcare issue (dermatologists not treating people of color adequately). Based on the results of my research, I intend to identify whether the social or the healthcare side have a greater impact on the existing disparities in dermatology. Your method for accomplishing the project: To write this paper, I will investigate different research that delves into both dermatologic health disparities and health disparities based on skin color.

The topic I chose for the library assignment was “racism in medical treatment”. I felt that this topic comes up in the novel, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot multiple times and also relates to the theme “voice” which is what we have been focusing on in our First-Year Experience class. Even though the time of “racism” is over, there are still acts of discrimination in the field of medicine. Many doctors and even more, patients, have been treated unfairly based on their race. Patients have been misdiagnosed or given a false diagnosis in order for the doctors to make money off of them because the doctor could care less about their health.…

Racial and ethnic problems when it comes to health and health care interventions is one health disparity. In the health care system the lack of proper data on race and ethnicity has become a problem in the quality of care. Self reported data can take years and requires changes to an already complex infrastructure. However some health plans and hospitals started collecting their own race/ethnicity data and have detected disparities. This has seriously delayed the developement of interventions. Information is not properly obtained, therefore there is no…

In summary, this online seminar entitled Unequal Treatment presented by Brian Smedley, Michell Van, and Linda Rae Murray was about the health disparities in the United States. During his presentation, Brian mentioned that the minority group have the worst health outcome compare to White people due to unequal access, and poor-quality care. Despite the introduction of the Affordable Care Act that has allowed many uninsured to have health insurance, people of color, especially African- Americans, still have the highest rate of insurance compare White Americans. Even those who have health coverage among the minority still facing other barriers, including economic, cultural, geographic, and linguistic that stop them to have access to a proper care.…

I am going to focus it on the injustices that African Americans continue to face in the United States today. That being, I know exactly what I need to get out of my interviewees, but it is probably a sensitive subject for some of the people I need to interview. I am not black, and I don’t know what it feels like to face this discrimination in everyday life. I can understand the tenderness that African Americans must feel then, when revealing and talking about their experiences with discrimination. I would think then, that it must be especially sensitive to talk about with a person from the race that they receive this everyday discrimination. It will be interesting to hear all the different types of prejudice that my interviewees have received throughout their lives. I would imagine that it ranges from just a look, or the way white Americans act around them, to voiced and physical altercations between themselves and white Americans. Hacker at times seems to be speaking directly to African Americans as he describes these altercations, “So many of the contacts you have with them (white Americans) are stiff and uneasy, hardly worth the effort.” But to me, that is exactly what the problem is. Why would it not be worth the effort? The first step to take for the uneasiness between the two races to cease to exist is for us (all people) to stop seeing color because once we act differently around the other is where…

The diversity in the United States has helped me to better understand and relate to others in ways that I may not have in the past. I have learned much from this class and about myself that there is still discrimination and prejudice in the United States. I have learned that I need to take the time and to get to know a person before I make any judgments against them. There are so many different kinds of people in the United States with the different backgrounds. We do not need to discriminate against anyone until we can look at ourselves first to make sure we are clean. We need to look beyound the core of there skin and what they are wearing, and the way they talk. Since this class I have steped back and looked around to see how people act with each other some get along just fine then you have the few that you can tell are uncomfortable. I have learned that everyone needs to be treated as equals it does not matter what your age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability. We just need to all get along and to educate others.…

Race is a pattern-based concept that has led scientists and laypersons alike to draw conclusions about hierarchical organizations of humans, which connect an individual to a larger preconceived culturally constructed group. Racial research has a long and controversial history. At the turn of the 20th century, sociologist and civil rights leader W. E. B. Du Bois was the first to synthesize natural and social scientific research to conclude that the concept of race was not a scientific category. Contrary to the then-dominant view, Du Bois maintained that health disparities between blacks and whites stemmed from social, not biological, inequality (Du Bois 1906). A child's sense of perceptions of the world as fair, equal, and just are significantly…

Growing up as a minority often hindered my interactions and changed my perspective of the people around me. Because of the dominating white supremacy in my community, I was forced to believe that being white was "better" and people with a fairer skin tone were "prettier" than my darker complexion. My friend, especially, made me feel that my skin tone only put me at a disadvantage. Throughout grade school, I was always the one with the short end of the stick often because people knew I was different. The severity increased when I entered middle school where I was pushed around and teased because I wasn't "pretty" enough and the only one with a darker complexion that was different from the standard white American. The…

We interact with many different people and races every day and it is essential to not have pre judgements based on stereotypes that sometimes make some races inferior than others. People are not to be judged by their skin color, but by their actions and behavior. Also, to use own or somebody else’s skin color to justify a bad behavior or action should not be acceptable. Our race or skin color is not the only fact that defines us. Perhaps a whole semester talking about race will open our mindsets and views. I am looking forward for our discussions about race since we are such a diverse…
