Abstract
In this experiment we explore the infestation of ECB (European Corn Borer) on different types of corn and how it effects the corn crop yield. The corn is grown in a controlled environment with the only changing variables being the type of corn and the concentrations of the infestation of the ECB. Varying levels of infestation are tested on a corn crop throughout a 140 day growing season, at the end of the season the crops are then measured for yield. Yield is determined by the number of ears per stalk and the number of kernels per ear. In conclusion, we determine that the ECB dramatically reduces the corn crop yield. The decline in yield, however varies depending on the corn variety.
Introduction
In this study we are looking at the effect of ECB(European corn borer) on the yield of the corn produced. The experiment was conducted in a controlled environment. Each crop was gown under the same conditions. Conditions such as soil, light, water and nutrients were kept constant. The controlled environment keeps the experiment from being effected by variables outside of those being tested. The independent variable is the experiment is the concentration of the infestation on the given crop. The concentration varied from no infestation to high infestation. The corn crops were then observed at the end of the growing season and the data of the corn yield was then recorded.
Method
This experiment was conducted for a 140 day growing season in a controlled environment. The corn was planted and was then infested by a given amount of ECB. The first group tested was the golden corn. Three groups of golden corn were infested by three varying amounts of ECB. Group A was effected by no ECB, group B was infested by a low level of ECB and group C was infested by a high concentration of ECB. At the end of the growing season the stalks of corn were then inspected and measured for yield. Corn crop yield is measured by the
