One out of three American kids are obese. This rate has nearly tripled in the past thirty years. According to the Medical Dictionary, obesity is an abnormal accumulation of body fat, twenty percent or more over an individual’s ideal body weight for their age and height. As we know obesity can lead to horrible things such as illness, disability, and death. To put a stop to obesity we need to start educating kids at a younger age, considering their rate is skyrocketing. Children need to be more aware of obesity, the facts and statistics, and how to avoid it and be healthy. Our job as a teacher is to promote physical activity in a classroom on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we cannot control what our students do for exercise at home or what they eat, but we can control what goes on in our classrooms, and that is the best place to start.…

Obesity is becoming a major worldwide epidemic that is a chronic disease which affects everyone young and old, male and female alike. The exact cause is still unknown and scientists are still trying to understand what triggers it. One cause is that in today’s fast paced world, people do not have time to sit down to home cooked meals, or exercise and really take good care of their heath. Fast food restaurants are replacing the home cooked meals and providing bigger portions on their menus and people not finding time to exercise. Instead, they choose to sit down and watch movies at home or surf the net as a source of entertainment due to economic reasons. Children are playing video games instead of playing sports or riding bikes (Obesity in America: What’s driving the epidemic?, 2012. 02). This is becoming a harmful trend which is contributing to the rise of chronic diseases. Obesity does not discriminate and studies over the years have found that there is a significant difference in obesity by ethnicity and race and it differs by sex and age. Obesity is a major contributor of heart disease, cancer, liver and gallbladder diseases, sleep apnea and respiratory issues, depression, infertility, erectile dysfunction and mental health conditions (Jacobson, 2000).…

Obesity occurs when an individual has more body fat then what is considered healthy for their height. People who have excess body fat are more likely to develop health issues then non-obese people. Sadly, obesity has become an epidemic in our nation, spreading throughout both the adult and adolescent communities. “Recent studies have shown that 17 percent of the nation’s 6- to 19-year-olds are obese, and that more than a third are overweight. Those rates have about doubled in the past three decades,” (Hotakainen 2012). Unquestionably, there have been many changes in our culture over the last 30 years. Technology and modern conveniences have transformed the way people work and play in the 21st century. Currently, many young people find themselves trying to keep up with schedules that, in most cases, leave little time for healthy choices. Thus, many children find it difficult to maintain their ideal body weight. Undeniably, there are many different lifestyle factors responsible for the obesity issue affecting our American youth today.…

Exercising is a huge factor on staying healthy. A vastly amount of kids in America are not participating in physical education. In the article “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home” Daniel Weintraub indicates “We limit television and encourage our boys to get out the house, either to participate in organized sports or to ride their bikes, skateboards, or roller blades(Weintraub,P.43,Par.15).” This particularly indicates that parents need to push…

“In the decade 1985-1995, Australia saw sharp increases in the number of overweight or obese, and conservative estimates suggest that this is increasing by at least 1% per year. These figures do not auger well for the future health and wellbeing of our communities” (NSW Department of Health, 2007). According to this statement, obesity is becoming more prevalent today and percentages are increasing every year. “The 2007/08 national health survey results indicate that 24.9% of children aged 5-17 years are overweight or obese” (Department of Health and Ageing, 2008). The Department of Health and Ageing, (2008) states “the consequences of childhood obesity is its persistence into adulthood”. In most cases when a child has been diagnosed as overweight or obese, the prospects of them becoming healthy and active in adulthood is low, which reinforces why encouraging physical activity and healthy eating habits is of paramount importance at an early age. “Once a child is overweight or obese it is unlikely that they will spontaneously revert to a healthy weight, predisposing them to many health concerns and suffering from an increase in medical conditions” (Department of Health and Ageing, 2008). Physical activity at school and at home can help to reduce and prevent childhood…

Numerous studies showed that a daily routine of exercise made people live longer lives, had healthier bodies, and were in a more positive psychological state than the people who did not perform exercise as part of their lifestyle. Majority of my family members were overweight and I witnessed many psychological effects that took a toll on their bodies and interfered with their work routine and also their social life. On the other hand, when I reached a certain age in my life, I knew that I did not want to have the health problems some of my family members did and decided to make exercise part of my daily routine to decrease the negative psychological effects that it could have had on myself. Many people used the excuse; I do not have time for exercise or I didn’t have any money for a gym membership. To me, this was just an excuse because anyone can take thirty minutes a day and go for a walk through the park or jog through the neighborhood, which cost no money at all. “Research demonstrated that individuals who exercised with others, that involved virtual reality stimulation, or getting feedback aimed at improved self efficiency and enjoyment, greater increase in stress reduction, mood, and well-being, and reduced anxiety and depression” (Plante 1).…

Lack of exercise plays an immense part in the obesity problem. People always come up with excuses to get out of exercising, such as believing it will not hurt too much to miss one day or that they do not have time to exercise. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's medical correspondent wrote, “More than 60 percent of American adults do not exercise regularly, and many are content to admit they do not exercise at all” (Gupta, par. 1). Gupta hits the nail on the head in this quote, explaining that Americans do not only realize they do not exercise regularly they also are open to admit it. This means that they do not realize how valuable exercising is for their health. Kinesiologist Steven Bray explains, “College is the first big transition in life, and it becomes an excuse not to exercise” (qtd. in Gupta, par. 3). Bray does a terrific job at showing how people use transitions in life as excuses not to exercise. While lack of exercise contributes to the obesity epidemic it is not the sole cause. #…

Because of this harsh reality calculation statics have shown that “…one-third of U.S. adults (37.7%) are obese [in America (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Every year this number has increased since the late 1990’s, and this number does not even include overweight youth in America (Palo Alto Medical Foundation). Obesity is something that can weaken your overall well being and shorten your life expectancy. It can bring social and mental illnesses in a person’s life as well as cause stress. Some studies can even prove direct links to obesity and physical sicknesses like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer. This can prove that if you don’t put healthy things into your body then your body will not keep you healthy.…

Supportive environments are those that enable a healthy lifestyle to be attained (Ben-Sefer). In the everyday child’s environment, a major factor of obesity that is commonly overlooked is the amount of physical activity than an individual engages in. This is a major premise that needs to be addressed in our attempts to limit obesity in our next generation. The more time an individual spends in front of the television, the less time that person could spend exercising and burning extra calories. Parents should encourage their children to watch less television and engage in sports or extracurricular activities at school instead. Hyunjae Yu reaffirms this correlation when he states “A sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits are both frequently discussed as being among the main causes of childhood obesity in the United States” (Yu). Being one of the main causes of obesity in the United States, parents should support and participate in physical activities with their child to reduce their chance of become obese. This also involves parents giving confidence to their child to remain active and maintain a high self-esteem so that their environment continues supporting a healthy lifestyle. The efforts of parents go a long way, but when the child is outside the family environment it is the responsibility of health workers and…

A recent survey done by the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) estimated that in 1979, 2% of youth between the age of two and seventeen were considered obese. In 2004, the rate had increased to almost triple, reaching 9%.
