A big similarity between the two pieces is that they both have animals depicted in them, and both seem to be symbolic of what’s happening in the artwork. In the Benouville David knelling in the center is center of the piece has his head down in a similar fashion to the sacrificial cow in the background. This makes a lot of sense as being anointed in this way meant literally devoting yourself to God and in a sense your old self died in order to give praise to God much in the same way the calf was sacrificed to do the same. The symbolism is less clear in the Netscher piece. There are two animals, a bird that is coming out of its cage and feeding form the women, and a monkey that is chained down and hiding its face. Both animals seem to represent the two characters they are being fed by. The women is feeding the bird and is free and uncaged, this seems to represent her own freedom and independence. She is pictured as a carefree women enjoying her life and is not weighted down by any struggles. The monkey with the man however is both chained down and hiding its face. This seems to symbolic of the man who has a sinister look to him. He is shrouded in shadows and we do not know if he possess a threat or not and the fact that the monkey is covering his face shows a kind of blind ignorance to the potential threat literally lurker inches away
