Each collection displays unique and priceless representations of the distinct genre. Artists represented include Rubens, Francois Boucher, Fragonard, Bierstadt, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Eastman Johnson. The Timken Museum is home to the Putnam Foundation. The affluent Putnam sisters, Misses Anne R. and Amy Putnam, coming from Vermont, arrived in San Diego in the early 1900s, accompanied by their elderly parents and followed by a millionaire uncle, Henry Putnam.

It was my first time at that museum and I am surely I will be back to do the audio tour. The artwork I chose was Lovers In the Park by Francois Boucher and was made in 1758. I was attracted to this piece because I instantly recognized the Rococo style of painting in which I really enjoy. To have the opportunity to experience and physically see a Rococo painting in person truly brings to life everything we discussed in class such as the gentle brushstrokes and meaningful colors that are involved and used in the Rococo style. I decided to challenge my skills and try to interpret the meaning of the painting on my own. From my first few glimpses of the painting, I noticed how the couple on the right had wealthy looking attire so I’m assuming they are aristocrats. To the left, there is another woman walking by and it seems as if the man is smirking at her in almost a flirtatious way while his girlfriend is unaware and stares into space. I also noticed that there are two baby statues above them that seem to aware of what was going on as they looked down at the couple. to me, the baby statues were a symbol of innocence and the dog next to the couple was a symbol of loyalty. The expressions on the figures faces were soft and pleasant. The image confirmed to express that at that time men were wealthy and powerful, and were able to get away with having more than one spouse, although you can tell the girlfriend in the painting seems somewhat uneasy with the situation. It turns out that the painting is Boucher's way of remarking on the endless game of love. "It invites the viewer to dream awhile" it continued to say and it successfully did that for

My recent visit to the Norton Simon Museum was very different than any previous experience I have had with modern art. With only a semester's worth of knowledge under my belt, I was most definitely in awe, and thoroughly entertained, to say the least. Although inspired by many, I chose to analyze two works with very similar subject matter, by two German Expressionist artists. I compared a piece entitled, "Bathing Girls", painted by Franz Marc, to the similarly titled "Bathers Beneath Trees"; a work by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.…

The Brooklyn Museum’s view of the portrait shows eighteenth-century mixed-race colonial elite of the island of Dominica in the West Indies. When first seeing this painting you can see the fine detail of how it was painted. Brunias was sure to pay attention to detail of clothings and face and yet still keep in mind the body language in which everyone was protrayed. The two women are shown accompanied by their mother and their children, along with eight African servants, as they walk on the grounds of a sugar plantation, one of the agricultural estates that were Dominica's chief source of wealth . Brunias documented colonial women of color as privileged and prosperous. The two wealthy sisters are distinguished from their mother and servants…

The reason I found this painting so intriguing, is since the content is so mysterious, I found it fun to be able to put my own interpretation on it. However it is said, that the little boy who looks as though he is getting ready to throw a handful of rose petals at the couple, is known as, Jest or, Folly and represents pleasure or joy. The figure behind him is much more complex and surprising. At first glance all I saw was the face of what seemed to be an innocent little girl, but if you look closely you’ll see her body is scaly like a reptile or a long snake tail. They say that since this figure seems to deceive us that she represents deception and has been identified by some scholors…

About a month ago, I made a visit to the San Antonio Museum of Art. The museum offered a huge array of pieces and exhibits. After spending a fun filled two hours combing through the museum’s awesome collections (Btw, I enjoyed the amulets and relics in the glass exhibits tremendously!), there were three pieces which made quite an impression on me. I left thinking how do I choose from the best of three—each having the power to intrigue or move me in some way. I felt a definite connection with each of the pieces. The piece I ended up choosing was on the 4th floor in the European Section. It was a painting by Agustin Esteve entitled Four Children. It is oil on canvas, 97 inches by 23 inches, and was painted in the late 18th century. When I first came by this painting, I tried to avoid reading the label on it, so that I could try and understand the piece before I allowed someone else to inform my perspective. I remember feeling a sense of mysticism to it when I first seen it. The painting depicts four children in a dark woody area. There appears to be a fog behind them. The child in the middle is dressed in all black with a bird in his hand. The piece seemed to evoke fear in me at first ( I am still not sure why!) Perhaps it was the colors and tones which helped to create that unsettling feeling(dramatic effect). Right off, I noticed the lines used were soft and smooth, like Renoir employs in his paintings/portraits. The emphasis was on the children in the center of the picture. My first impression was that the kids were lost somewhere and very afraid, but that idea did not mesh well with me because one the boys seemed to cling to him, while the other stared off into the distance with no emotion in his eyes, and he seemed to be leading the boy away with his eyes. Off to the far right is a young girl dressed in her Sunday best, with a flower and black pendant in her left hand and a ribbon on her chest.…

The moment when I glanced at this painting my first question was “where are these people heading?” I believe they are going to work, home, school or want to take a walk in the city. One thing that made me stop was that everyone is just sitting down minding their own business focused reading the daily newspaper. Nobody is socializing with each other and I wonder why? Maybe it’s just their only time to sit around and have quiet time. From being so busy all day, maybe they are just starting their day and want to take a look of what’s going on in the world by reading the paper or it is possible that they don’t know each other. I really don’t know, I’m just inferring. The Ladies and Gentlemen sitting in the train look so elegant and the designs of the transportation makes it look luxuries. It looks antique but glamorous. I ask myself “what it would be like to live in a different era?” Having to use the metropolitan rail journeys and living in a big city like London.…

I have always been drawn to photographs that capture new love and romance. I love photography in general; especially weddings and engagement photos. Vittorio Matteo Corco’s painting, “When Love is Young,” can be viewed in the Appleton’s European gallery. It is a painting that was created in 1883 and has captured the attention of its viewers over two hundred years. The painting depicts a young man and woman who are very much in love. The couple is starring deeply into each other’s eyes, as if they are falling in love for the first time. The passion that the man and woman have for each other is what initially drew me into this painting, but I then became interested in the elaborate detail that Corco added. The man photographed is probably a poor sailor. He is dressed in a grungy outfit with cut off sleeves and has dirty hands. She on the other hand, is wearing her Sunday best; a beautiful, detailed and tailored gown with silk gloves and her hair elegantly pinned back. By the way he is peeking over the balcony, I assume they are sneaking around and trying to hide that they are contacting one…

This painting gives me an odd feeling because it makes me think about why she would be happy, when most widows would grieve when they have lost their significant other. Makes you as the viewer wonder what really went on in the relationship. Maybe he was an abuser and got what he deserved in an accident or maybe he was a very well off man that left her the world of riches. Or it could just be that she is ready to move on in her life and is happy. One will never know what happened to her husband…

Merriam- Webster defines culture as “the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations.” Enticed by this, I go where any North Texas culture- seeking teenager would go: the Dallas Museum of Art. Walking in, I am overwhelmed by all the displays of expression; some are confusing, some are straightforward, and some are just plain odd. My friends and I make a game out of the experience, attempting to mimic the sculptures of the Olmec people and recreate art painted by Fernand Léger. The immersion sends me into a state of refreshment. The individualism that is manifested through mind blowing artwork inspires me to write again, to claim words as my own and place them down on paper in combinations that have never before been imagined.…
