Lake Shaste: A Short Story
I knew I wouldn’t make it to the top of the murky, warm and brown waters. I could feel the oxygen being released quickly from my lungs and bubbles swiftly skimming my skin as I slowly reached the bottom of the lake. I heard the faint cries for help and loud splashing as my sight becomes blurred. I felt someone’s hands grab mine and pull me onto the grainy dusty dirt. My vision comes back and I feel everyone’s eyes on me. They all immediately start laughing at me as I stood up and brushed the dirt off of me, feeling something tightly clutch my body.
Two days ago I found out I was going houseboating with the rest of my large family in Lake Shasta. My mom, dad, brother, and I are now taking the long ride to the lake with the rest of the family

We slowly drag all of our heavy duffle bags onto the boat and go into the rooms to unload our stuff. My dad backs out of the dock as I look out the window seeing our cars slowly get smaller and smaller until it receded from my view. I look back at everyone calmly unpacking and not worrying about the murky waters that surround them. “Dad, I forgot I don’t know how to swim.” I whisper trying not to embarrass myself. “Meg, this is how you are going to learn. If I throw you in the water right now you are gonna swim or drown. What do you want to do?” He whispered loudly. “I’m gonna swim!” I yelled. Everybody turned their heads towards me and went back to what they were doing. My dad found a place to dock the boat and all my cousins ran outside to play on the shore. But there wasn’t a pull out bridge like there usually is. “Stop!” My dad yelled, “Let me get the plank they gave us to use.” Everybody backed up as my dad took the mallet, the plank, and some large nails to keep the boat in place. My dad peacefully walked across the plank it wasn’t stable so it bent a little. The boat was docked tightly to the land my family walked out happily with coolers, beach chairs, and buckets to make sand

You cannot help but envy them as show with great skill their ability to catch the…

Stories of survival at sea have captured people’s curiosity and imagination throughout history. The struggles that some seafarers have faced while drifting on the open sea are remarkable. “The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane is the story of four crew members trying to survive on the open sea while in a dinghy after their ship sank. Throughout the story, Crane describes how man and nature react with one another. By his description of their reactions, Crane makes it clear that nature does not care about man’s well being.…

I boarded the boat thinking it wouldn’t be that bad. I was wrong. I stayed in the steerage for months. The steerage is the below deck part of the boat where the steering mechanisms are. It was disgusting, dark and cramped. Although we were under such conditions, I still managed to make a few friends. The sad part is I watched many of them get sick and eventually die. This one boy in particular fell seriously ill practically over night. He seemed to be in excruciating pain. I was lucky I didn’t come down with the same sickness.…

I distinctly remember going down there with two of my friends Jack and John. On this particular time, Jack was already down there and I had to pick up John. he suggested we grab some firewood to cook what we caught for dinner. To me, that sounded like a good idea so we got about three bundles of firewood and a lighter. When we got to the lot John and me surprised Jack by telling him our plan to cook what we caught. At this time it was about three. Jack took off his shirt and ran into the lake at full speed and feel about five feet into the water. John ran to the…

I fell on the boat ramp laughing my tail off. Finally, we got our boats in the water and started packing them down with our supplies. I have never seen so much supplies for a one day trip. We had to make about five trips to get everyone down there and our supplies on the sandbar which is called Little Sugar Loaf. We had about 13 people on that sandbar we were staying that night. We started out by finding a spot and setting up our tents. It didn't take me that long to set up my tent. I mostly helped other set up their tents and sleeping bags and other supplies. There were about four kids that had to carry wood for the fireplace. While others were setting up the grill and lights for tonight. The sun was so hot I was about ready to get in the cool muddy water. I got my chores done for the tents and my buddies and I went swimming in the…

I saw the rip current open up a few times that day, but by the time it rolled around noon, it was pulling more because the water was going out for low tide. When I saw the raft, I never really put two and two together until the raft got in the rip current. Two kids and their dad were rapidly moving out to sea. I reacted just like we were taught in class; dropping my flag and calling in on the radio. I leaped from my tower to the sand, grabbed my buoy and sprinted down the beach. I did a perry angle and took off into the water, throwing my buoy to the side as I got knee deep in the surf. I porpoise dove through the shallow water, came up and sprinted out to my victims, keeping a close eye on them as I did. By the time I got to them, the dad had abandoned his kids and swam in saving himself. The kids had jumped out of the raft, which was now upside down and proceeded to try swimming the raft in. I told them I was a lifeguard and here to help. The girl, about my age, looked at me as if I were crazy and told me they didn't need any help. I looked at her younger brother, who was tired and panting, and I asked if he was okay. He desperately told me, gasping for a breath, that he needed help. I wouldn't have been able to bring both victims and the raft in, while fighting a rip current. So I firmly grabbed the rope on the raft, with each of them holding, and started to kick. I soon realized I was getting nowhere and still drifting out to sea. Panicking, I scanned the beach for back up. When the lifeguard truck pulled up, I let out a sigh of relief. There were about 5 guards who came hustling out of the truck with buoys to come and back me up. When they reached me, it took some pulling to get everyone in safely raft…

Luckily for me the drive today isn’t as long as the two mile trek to our spot in Black Bay. Moments later we arrive and start un-winding decoys and dropping them in the water, making the perfect “U” shape so the ducks have a spot to land. I realize that in a few hours I am going to have to reach my hand into the blistering cold water to pick them up again, but that is okay because these days are by far my favorite of the year, these days I get to spend time with my dad and grandfather doing something that we all love to…

A rush of crisp morning air-filled my lungs as I inhaled. Roaring water attacking the banks of the river captivated my eyes. 8 o'clock, the perfect time to be kayaking because the water still resembled glass displaying white sand littered with seashells and the natural soothing breeze relaxes my unusually tense body. Even the scenery is perfect at this time because the sun gives the colored tear shaped leaves a warm glow. Everything about kayaking is perfect, except for one thing…spiders.…

    The Swimming Lesson

How do you teach a child how to swim? Shallow water and with some one who is kind and patient is how I learned. I was not in school yet when my father gave me my first lesson. One afternoon, he decided I should accompany him to Bear Creek for a bit of fishing. When we arrived at the creek, dad parked the truck on one bank and then said, “We should fish from the other bank bank”Being too small to understand what was going on, I did not see anything unusual in that and was not expecting what came next. Dad said, “since the creek was not very deep we would just wade across.”Always eager to play in the cold water I agreed and followed as he walked into the creek. After just a few steps the water was up to my waist and I was starting to get nervous. Then another step or two brought the water up to my chest and I stopped and held my arms up for dad to carry me. Used to having him heed my request to be picked up any time I raised my arms, I was surprised when he took a step back and told me to “just let my feet float to the top and swim to me.” Since he was only an arms length away, I laughed and did as he asked. Then surprisingly he took another step backward and told me to paddle with my hands, kick with my feet and just keep swimming. He took another step backward, then another and another and before I realized what was happening I had crossed the creek. Excited, I yelled, “i can swim! I want to do it again!” And we did. I must have crossed that creek 10 or 12 times that afternoon. Dad was walking alongside, showing me how to dog paddle, then how to do an overhand stroke, float on my back and even hold my breath. That afternoon I was sure I had accomplished something great. I had to have a lot more lessons before I was allowed to swim in any water that was over my head. Learning how to swim made me love that cold water in the creek even more. Now being much older every time I have cooled off in the lake, river or pool, I have been…

In the summer of 2012, my mother and I decided to go up north to Medford, Wisconsin. This weekend it was a special day! The Fourth of July! All I was worried about was fireworks. I love fire my parents always called me a pyro as a little kid. Son we packed up all our stuff for the weekend and headed out for the long car ride ahead of us. The first thing I saw when we pulled up was a huge landscape filled with trees and small, leafy brush everywhere! In the middle of it was a gigantic pond, I guess you could call it a lake. It was this weekend that I added multiple things to my experiences. Boating, lighting off fireworks, and getting lost in the woods changed my perspective a little bit.…

I then went and touched the floor with my whole body, but then I felt something heavy forcing me down. I tried to proceed up but I couldn’t move. It was a fat boy sitting on me in the water. I tried to get him off but I just couldn’t. I thought to myself, “How can I get him off?” I had to think fast. I was running out of breath and started to make air bubbles. I then started to swallow water and then I felt him came off and I race for the surface. I came out and took a huge breath. I screamed and cried as I came out of the water. It was a narrow escape. Only God could have saved…
