Clever Killer
What was the last mistake you made that really ruined things for you?
In the short story "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl, Mary Maloney the protagonist is seen as the average house wife living, until she murders her husband, Patrick Maloney, a police officer with a frozen leg of lamb. Mary discovers about a divorce her husband wanted and acted upon it killing him. Mary Maloney’s personality traits such as her cleverness to fool the cops to believe what she says, her loyalty to make her seem as an unsuspicious suspect, and lastly being observant knowing when she should make a decision, help her get away with killing her husband making her the perfect example of a successful murderer. Mary Maloney’s cleverness is shown when she convinces the police officers to believe she was not home at the time of the murder, when she cries in the in front of police officers and when she calls police officer for help whom knows her. After Mary Maloney kills her husband with the leg of lamb she then puts it into the oven to cook and goes to the groceries, "She told how she'd put the meat in the oven-'it's there now, cooking'- and how she'd slopped out to the grocer for vegetables" (Dahl 6). Mary quickly goes to the grocery store to make it seem as if she were not home, and so when the police officers came and asked questions it would be true that she really did go to the grocers and did not lie also hiding the murder weapon. These actions display Mary’s cleverness on how she can get away with murder and hide the murder weapon without being caught. The second instance Mary displays her cleverness is when Mary came home from the grocers and pretended to cry after seeing her husband dead, "she ran over to him, knelt down beside him, and began to cry her heart out." (Dahl 5). Mary had cried at the scene of the crime making it look like as if it was a surprise to her and she was sad even though she

How could Mary be the killer if she wasn’t at the crime scene? According to court documents, “It wasn’t six o’clock yet and the lights were still on in the grocery shop.”(Dahl). It would have been impossible for Mary to commit the crime because she was at the grocery shop when the crime took place. Mrs. Maloney went to the grocery store for some vegetables. The grocer states, “Mrs. Maloney came to the store to purchase vegetables and potatoes, bought two of the potatoes. She seemed happy and calm as she…

First, Mary Maloney had killed her husband because he wanted to divorce. In anger Mary got a leg of lamb from the freezer and after hearing the news of wanting a divorce, Mary acted fast with disapproval ,and so” she swung the leg of lamb high and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head”(Dahl 3).This proves that Mary defeated her demons and had not wanted a divorce so she took matters into her own hands.Second after killing her husband should found a successful and creative way to hide the crime. after killing her husband she decided to cook the leg of lamb so she “... placed it in a pan and turned on the oven on high and shoved it inside.”(Dahl 4) What's my reason because Mary killed her husband and couldn't deal with the fact that she was going to jail for those acts, so she covered up the crime and successfully defeated her demon. In conclusion, Mary had successfully defeated her demons and was able to progress in…

She went into the living room, saw him standing by the window with his back to her, and stopped. "I've already told you," he said. "Don't make supper for me. I'm going out." At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head. She might as well have hit him with a steel bar.” People may tend to underestimate the power of those who seem to be week. Mrs. Maloney may have seemed to be a very nice gentle woman that looks week compared to her husband but then ends up killing him. Women are typically, smaller and may not appear as strong as men so, being able to knock a man in the head with the force of a steel bar is astonishing. She was then able to come up with a plan to make it appear as if she had no idea what had happened to look innocent. This goes to show not to under estimate the week. Thereby, I think Roald Dhal wanted us to think that Mrs. Maloney was a victim in the story because she was devoted and respected her husband unlike him, and even though she may seem week she covered up her…

Betrayal is not a necessary part of life as evidenced in Roald Dahl’s “Lamb to the Slaughter” And Shirley Jackson’s “The lottery”. Lamb to the Slaughter was a story where. Mary Maloney was going to have a son, but the husband had to leave because having a family wasn't going to be good for his job as a detective. Leaving her is an act of betrayal “I know it’s a bad time to be telling you this, but there was simply wasn't any other way. Of course, I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after” (Dalh Pg.2). Betrayal should not be a necessary part of life because the husband wants to leave her and the unborn baby. He wants to leave his family just because of his job.
