In Lamb to the Slaughter, the vibes from the two characters, (Mr. and Mrs. Malony) seem very out of place. Readers get almost an awkward feeling towards the beginning of this story. When Billy said, “I should’ve thought you’d simply be swamped with applicants.” the landlady replied with, “Oh I am my dear, of course I am…. I’m inclined to be just a teeny weeny bit choosy and particular - if you see what I mean.” Unlike Lamb to the Slaughter, right away you can tell this doesn’t sound normal without having to read the whole story first. Earlier in the story, the landlady was also very quick to answer Billy when he was at the door as if she knew he was going to be there. These actions prove that this woman was not just some ordinary lady, but a lady who had qualities that were unusual and uncomfortable. Dahl gives these characters personalities an eerie feel to them.
As a matter of fact, Dahl used very strange or uncommon ways for Billy and Mr. Malony to die that you would never expect would happen. In Lamb to the Slaughter, the wife kills her husband with a frozen lamb leg, then has detectives eat it so she could get rid of the evidence. In The Landlady, the woman eventually poisons the boy and after he dies, she’ll eventually stuff him and keep him in a room filled with other victims she has killed and stuffed. In these two short stories, there isn’t any slash murder scenes. Both these events stated above are unexpected and somewhat oddly
