Critique Review to Land, Territory and Identity
The article “Land, Territory and Identity” was written by David Storey, who is a famous English playwright and novelist. Moreover, it is a chapter from “Making Sense of Place” which was published in 19th April, 2012. The main purpose of this article was to connect land and territory to our identity through the rural areas and the significance of place in nationalist reasoning. On coincidence of circumstances, David Storey lets us clearly realize the link between land, territory and identity, which will be summarized and critically evaluated ahead.
To begin with, the article “Land, Territory and Identity” written by David Storey consists of 2 big parts. First part is called Land and Local Identity, which is about people’s sense of place linked with places where we born, grow up and had negative or positive things happened in past. Farmers and other people living in rural areas have deep knowledge and feelings for the land they live for long years. However, that gained knowledge may …show more content…
This part is about what people gave up throughout history for exemption of their lands based on political views. A lot of national conflicts like wars occurred because of special places and common territory. Since people did not want their land ended up in the hands of foreign invaders, they were fighting and losing large amount of blood. Moreover, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries Irish people sacrificed their blood in chasing of specific ideals to protect the national ground. Their rebel leader wrote that the Earth needed the red wine to be heated, who in turn kept in mind people’s blood. So, manipulated by politicians, people struggled and died for their country, showing how strong connections with the territory they
