Lasalle Art Analysis: The Hopeful
This piece is located in the LaSalle Art Museum by the name of “The Hopeful”. The artist, Frank Hyder created this painting in 1988 on approximately 5’ by 7’ carved masorite panels with acrylic paint. This piece was especially interesting due to the canvas it was painted on. The carvings on the masorite looked almost like a thumbprint. At the bottom center and top center there are fingers reaching towards the center the of the painting and a large trunk of a tree behind them. Sitting in the palm of the bottom hand there is a person sitting in a fetal position. At the far left of the piece there seems to be a silver totem like structure surrounded by a number of small blue swirls. At the opposite end there are various nude women raising

The two images I chose for the analysis paper are Martini, Simone and Lippo Memmi, Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita (1333) and Brunelleschi, Filippo, Dome of Florence Cathedral (1420-36). The reason I chose these are because they relate to the Catholic religion in different ways. The Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita was the beginning of the Catholic art during the Gothic time period while the Dome of Florence Cathedral was not only a masterpiece of artwork it was also a breakthrough for the construction during that time and for the rest of history.…

One of the most influential artists of the Modern Period of art was James Whistler. Whistler was an accomplished printer and painter and a brief background of the painter allows us to understand Whistler, and why more than any artist of his time, he would be attracted to Japanese woodblock prints called Ukiyo-e. It is also essential to understand the essence of Ukiyo-e, Japanese aesthetics and its migration to the Western world. Additionally, a chronological selection of Whistler’s works must be analyzed showing how he integrated the lessons he learned from his exposure to Ukiyo-e.…

The scene it portrays shows a woman holding an infant while she stands on a chariot drawn by two lions. Surrounding her in the air and around her feet are sixteen angels or cherubs. In the background there is a horizon with foggy mountains and a lake. On the left and right of the picture there are two columns reminiscent of the Classical era and at the top of the painting there is curtains and berry garland, almost like the scene was staged in a theater.…

I picked John Byrd, the artist, because most of his projects are of animals and i am an animal person that has a lot of love for animals. He looks like he is trying to convey his love for nature, animals, and interest for the organs and intestines of animals. John looks like he is trying to show the animals in a relatable way so more people can connect and relate to the artwork. In most of his pieces, John shows the animal with its inside organs and intestines showing through, maybe showing that we are all the same inside. The sculpture is labeled as a horse but untitled, it is a horse standing on what looks like a stone platform. His description of the artwork doesn’t tell the meaning behind the sculpture or its reasons for the…

The painting in the Mint Museum of Art Collection that I have chosen for my paper is titled Philip the Fair, by Kehinde Wiley. He painted this piece in 2006. He portrays a naturalistic style of an anonymous young African-American male model. It’s a larger than life painting standing one hundred and twelve inches by eighty-six inches tall. One must look up at the painting if not standing far enough away to view it entirely. This piece is an oil and enamel on canvas resulting in intense colors with a lustrous surface.…

In Carolyn Dean’s “The Trouble with (the Term) Art” (2006), the author explores the significance of the word art itself and dives into the deeper meaning of not only what art is, but when a piece can be labeled as art. Carolyn Dean successfully accomplishes her goal of providing readers with knowledge about the consequences of identifying art, where such a notion did or did not occur. Although Dean is pretty opinionated throughout the article, she backs up all of her thoughts by providing ample amounts of evidence and research supporting her claim. Her argument is solid and I think she provides very salient points throughout her article; however, I found her use of language hard to follow for readers who do not have such a profound background in art history.…

Some objects in the painting are a pregnant woman, a burning candle, a skull, and a cross lying on the table under some books. The way the woman’s head is rested on her hand and she is staring into the candle light, shows that she is in deep thought. I believe that the woman is reflecting upon her life. She looks to be pregnant, which represents life. The unity of…

As I walked around with a copy of this piece in my school bag for a week or so, I often thought about what I could possibly say about this painting/artist. Also during this time, I shared this painting with a couple of people, and asked them what they thought of the piece without telling them what it depicted. One individual stated, “They look sad about something.” Another individual stated, “The people appeared shame for some reason.” Then I informed them what the piece was and they wanted to look at it again, they were quite impressed with the work after they realized what it was about.…
