Lateesha Monologue
Even though there is a sign that says Lateesha’s Tomatoes, it ain’t stopping the crows and birds eying those big, plump treasures. Stupid chicken wire has holes big enough that people can reach in. Those dudes don’t even read. Remember, you drop bread and the birds will start eatin’ it up right away. Swarms of ‘em coming in like bullets. Couldn’t do anything about ‘em. The other’s are starting to do everything they can to save their crops. Least I have tomatoes left, but I won’t if I don’t do anything. Had to do something about it, and fast. It would be too tiring even for Royce to chase those stupid birds. I thought of big farms. How do they stop crows and birds? Then it hit me like a rhino! I needed a scarecrow. Have a garden, and it doesn’t even have a scarecrow? What have I been thinking! This was gonna be my suprise gift to the garden. Don’t want nobody knowing about it. One morning it’ll be there, in the middle of the garden. This will help everyone out. Lateesha will know how much a hero I am, helping the community. She needs to know that I care for others and not just myself. Tomato is gonna save the day! …show more content…
I remember the little straw hat I had as a little kid, that ‘ll be perfect. Been dying to give it away. Looks ridiculous on me! I put the scarecrow together by getting two brooms. But I didn’t know how to put e’m together. When I tried tape and thin string, the sticks were too loose and fell apart. I asked Kapp’s gym if they could give me some of that rope. I cut the thick rope into parts and made rope that was not too thick and long, but it was still strong. Then, I put the clothes on the stick and shoved a pillow in to make it look like a person. I asked the boy to give me one of those pumpkins. Told him I wanted to give one to my friend. The last bit, a pumpkin head to top it

This scene is important to both the text of the play and the film adaptation, and serves similar purposes in both. For example, it signifies the rising action of the film as it includes the first of many false accusations and confessions. In addition to the importance this scene has to the structure of the play, it is also a pivotal scene for both Tituba and Abigail. For Tituba, this scene is her brief rise to power.
