Tellez. The story is about a barber who receives a surprising visit one day from Captain Torres who came in to the barber shop to get a shave. Captain Torres was an evil man who had killed many of the barbers people. While the barber was shaving him he thought many times over if he should kill him or not for all the things he had done. The theme of this story is “before making a difficult choice in life make sure you weigh your pros and cons.” The theme is very well developed throughout the story and is shown in many ways. One example of the theme is the barber when he is debating whether or not to kill Captain Torres. He carefully evaluates his pros and cons before making the conscious decision not to kill him. The barber thinks to himself; “what would I do then with the body? Where would I hide it? I would have to flee, leave all this behind, take shelter far away, very far away” (p.345). In this quotation the barber is evaluating the situation before acting.
Another example of the theme in this story is seen at the end when Captain Torres says; “‘They told me you would kill me. I came to find out if it was true. But it’s not easy to kill. I know what I’m talking about.’” (p.346).
We find out that he still went into the shop knowing that he might be killed. The Captain must have evaluated the pros and cons before the decision was made to enter the shop for a shave. It is very easy to relate to this theme since it is a very generic theme. I evaluate my pros and cons on a daily basis for many decisions. It can vary anywhere from what clothes to wear that day to whether or not I should break up with my girlfriend. One example of a difficult decision that I have had to make that I can remember was when I had to chose which sister I was going to be living with considering the fact that I have three. I had to evaluate
