Quotation, page # Reaction/Response
Ch.1:” He is now at rest off the isle of El Giglio, sewn up in his hammock, with a thirty-six-pounder shot at his head and another at his heels.” PG. 2
This quote tells what sailors did to respect those who have died. This shows me that things that were done back then are a lot different than what we do now.
Ch.2:” I have not wanted for anything now that you are here,” said the old man. PG. 9
Edmond’s father has longed for his son’s return and now that he is back he is happy once again.
Ch.3: “Tell me this once more, Mercedes; is this your final answer?” “I love Edmond Dantes,” the girl answered coldly,” and none other shall be my husband.” PG. 13
This is foreshadowing one of Edmond’s soon to be enemies because Fernand is jealous of the love that Mercedes has for Edmond.
Ch.4: “My friends,” he said, with a gloomy shake of the head, ”It is far more serious matter than we supposed.” PG. 24
This is showing that Edmond is going to have to learn to live in a jail cell because of what he is being accused of.
Ch.5: “How dreadful!” cried Renee, turning pale. “It appears that a little Bonapartist plot has been discovered,” Villefort continued. PG. 29
Edmond has been accused of a planning a Bonapartist plot. Since that is the case he will not be going home at all because this was a serious matter.
Ch.6: Villefort went to the fire, threw the letter into the fire, threw the letter into the flames, and remained watching it until it was reduced to ashes. PG. 36
This is foreshadowing Edmond’s other enemy because instead of setting him free he is getting rid of the evidence that might be able to set him free.
Ch.7: Dantes got up and quite naturally looked in the direction the boat was moving. Before him, at a distance of a hundred fathoms, rose the black, steep rock on which stood the frowning

When the movie opens, Fernand and Edmond had been best friends for the entirety of their youth. Yet despite this, Fernand chooses to betray his friend to gain something he selfishly wanted. In the meantime, Edmond never committed the crime he was accused of, leading him to a false sentence in Chateau d’If prison. This is like Jesus walking through his life knowing his one friend, Judas, would eventually betray him. Judas received gold for his selfish want, while Jesus was crucified for a crime he never committed. Fernand, like Judas and many people today, would do anything…

Edmond Dantes, The Count of Monte Cristo, Sinbad the Sailor, Abbe Busoni, Lord Wilmore, throughout Edmond’s plot for revenge in The Count of Monte Cristo he has become many people and he has also learned that revenge brings suffering. In his blind hatred for the men that wronged him, Dantes fails to realize how his actions harm the innocent people connected to the lives of the wrongdoers. For example, when the count uses Benedetto to discredit Villefort and Villefort comes home to a murdered son and a suicided wife, even though these deaths are not cause directly by Monte Cristo, “he realized that he had gone beyond the limits of rightful vengeance and that he could no longer say, ‘God is for me and with me,’…Then,…

Oh, yes, indeed, I should fight a duel for any of these things; but in return for a slow, deep, infinite, eternal pain, I should return as nearly as possible a pain equivalent to the one inflicted on me. This quote also shows that Faria has good character and knows right from wrong even though those lines are blurred. Faria even sacrifices himself so that Edmond can escape. Faria tells Edmond “‘Hush! Hush!’ murmured the dying man, ‘that they may not separate us if you save me!’” (Dumas 225). This quote shows that the Abbé knows what freedom costs and is willing to pay it for Edmond. The reader can acknowledge this as a major turning point in the novel as this story changes from a novel of captivity to one of adventure and…

Edmond Dantes, once a kind-hearted, well-respected sailor and man, dramatically developed into a hateful, vengeful man. In the beginning of the novel, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, he was loyal and insisted that he, “owes everything to his father and Mercedes” because his father had raised him to be the responsible man he was. His crew respected him and followed his orders. However, after spending 14 years in the Chateau d’If, he sought revenge after those who did him wrong. His heart was filled with such a strong hatred that he didn’t have any room for love. Abbe Faria spoke to Dantes about the thought of revenge and confessed, “I regret having helped you clarify your past…because I have instilled in your heart a feeling that wasn’t there before: vengeance” (Dumas 58). Faria blames himself for Edmond’s change of heart while in prison. He had…

Edmond Dantes is a good-hearted and God-fearing person, a sailor who had a bright future ahead at the moment he's imprisoned: he was about to be promoted and to marry the woman he loved so dearly. His life is ruined because of others envy to him especially his friend Fernand Mondego, who betrayed him and and later takes his fiance Mercedes as his own wife. Edmond Dantes was the victim of an unfortunate coincidence, because of lack of education, he doesn’t know how to read and write, thus, he wasn’t able to know what the letter is all about which was then a plan of rebellion by Bonaparte. It tells us how important education is to our lives. It is hard to be uneducated. We need to learn for us to grow and to develop ourselves.…
