Monte Cristo
Edmond Dantes, once a kind-hearted, well-respected sailor and man, dramatically developed into a hateful, vengeful man. In the beginning of the novel, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, he was loyal and insisted that he, “owes everything to his father and Mercedes” because his father had raised him to be the responsible man he was. His crew respected him and followed his orders. However, after spending 14 years in the Chateau d’If, he sought revenge after those who did him wrong. His heart was filled with such a strong hatred that he didn’t have any room for love. Abbe Faria spoke to Dantes about the thought of revenge and confessed, “I regret having helped you clarify your past…because I have instilled in your heart a feeling that wasn’t there before: vengeance” (Dumas 58). Faria blames himself for Edmond’s change of heart while in prison. He had …show more content…
The count felt regretful about his revenge because he believed that it should’ve God’s will to decide the fate of his wrongdoers. The old Edmond was revealed through his pure spirit and faith in God. He feels that he should’ve trusted God to rightfully punish them which exposed his regret and sympathy. Another repetitive theme was love conquers all hate. In the end of the novel, the count puts aside his hatred and confesses his love to Haydee and they leave together to start a new life. The count declares, “I wanted to punish myself, but God wishes to forgive me” (Dumas 529). He is given new hope and new life because of Haydee, and he is overcome with love and passion to erase his hatred and negativity. Lastly, the theme, of wait and hope is reoccurring throughout the novel. The count says this to Valentine and Maximilien countless times to inspire them to have patience because the best things come to those who wait. Just like the count waited 14 years for vengeance and for Haydee, they would wait to love each

Towards the end the book as written on page 422, he returns to his identity as a changed Edmond Dantes and writes to Valentine and Maximillian stating, "And never forget, that until the day when God will deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is contained in these two words 'Wait and Hope." This not only displays his desire to emulate these qualities himself but his utter belief in their inherent existence universally as a method of living. Specifically, this quote emphasizes Wait and Hope as the theme, because it illustrates them as a prominent idea in the book to be learned by all characters, and existing as Dantes writes, in, "all human wisdom". An intelligent man acknowledges it as a theme to be learned. Dantes as the main character in the Novel is a great example of the importance of Wait and Hope as he displays this in his actions with Mercedes and recommended it to Maximillian and Valentine as a way to approach their lives. In these way, Dantes portrays the theme of Wait and Hope and further distinguishes it from the…

Have you ever been wrongly accused of something? Perhaps a dear friend blames you for taking a hairbrush that they merely misplaced, or a family member yells at you for letting the house pet out, even though you were in another room completely. Usually we get upset with this person, and should the charge have large enough consequences, we begin to harbor a desire for revenge. This is what became of the lead character in the film The Count of Monte Cristo. The Count of Monte Cristo, released in 2002, was a film adaptation of a novel by the same name, written by author Alexandre Dumas. Within the span of the two hour long film, the audience views the tragic betrayal and false imprisonment of a young French sailor, by the name of Edmond Dantes,…

In clarifying the blatantly subjective nature of the term "Justice," it is easy to determine that the Count of Monte Cristo was unjust in his actions. He may have been acting out of a personal sense of justice, but was selfish and short-sighted enough to injure people on whom he did not intend to wreak revenge. His sense of justice, was not, contrary to what the term itself implied, just. The fates of, and events surrounding, Caderousse, Benedetto, Albert, and Danglars all support the charge that the Count of Monte Cristo acted unjustly.…

    Monte Cristo Romanticism

The film of The Count of Monte Cristo directed by Kevin Reynolds embodies a wide range of characteristics specific to romantic literature such as a love of nature, a respect for primitivism, and a value of the common man. Almost immediately, another romantic idea is revealed: the distinct separation between the working and aristocratic class, along with the belief that many of the ill wills of society result from this privileged upper class. Reynolds portrays these concepts typical of the French Romantic era, from which The Count of Monte Cristo originates, by calling attention to the bond between nature and man’s freedom, the ironic complexity of common man, and the insignificance of wealth in terms of one’s happiness, through the development of the character, Edmond Dantès.…

Edmond drastically changed his destiny when he used all his money and power and sworn revenge towards the people who imprisoned him and who aislate him from life during fourteen years. When Dantes sees the pain that he had caused to mercedes and her son, and recognizes his cruel actions he questions himself by asking “I’m not considering the past correctly, / can my goal have been senseless?”(Dumas 497). Likewise, when the protagonist in the song recognizes that all the power had blinded him and he wasn’t ruling his kingdom in a correct way he states “I know Saint Peter wouldn’t call my name”(Cold Play 37-38). In both of the quotes the protagonist accepts that their actions had been abusive and that they had been following a wrong path full of corrupted power. In The Count Of Monte Cristo, the author selects the words “goal” and “senseless” to address the fact that Dantes passed fourteen years planning his own revenge path in life and used all his money and power to overpass all the obstacle trying to stop him in these evil path. There was still some part in Edmond’s heart that stop him from taking these path, but when he acquired all these money, and with it power, his balance automatically leaned towards the evil making him walk in the wrong path of life. Equivalently, the author of the song chooses to use the name “Saint Peter” to make a religious reference…

The struggle for inner peace is a universal challenge to humanity. The ability to transcend worthless ventures is essential to finding happiness. However, people often get caught up in ambitions that can destroy their lives, making them lose their true purpose in the process. In Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo, the young sailor Edmond Dantes is betrayed and falsely imprisoned for treason. After escaping solitary confinement, Dantes finds a vast treasure, assumes multiple new identities, and begins an elaborate plot to exact vengeance on those who wronged him. As part of this scheme, Dantes befriends Haydee, a young Grecian princess sold into slavery after her family was betrayed by a French officer. Haydee joins Dantes in his mission and conspires to bring justice to the traitor who stole her life. Haydee’s quest is parallel to Dantes’ search for revenge, which furthers illustrates the triumph of love over futile vengeance.…

Instead of respecting Boca’s decision not to share his misfortune in its entirety, Dante physically attacks Boca by grabbing his neck and pulling his hair. This evil behavior provokes the reader into considering that maybe Dante should be in Hell and Boca should not, especially since all he does in response is squeal rather than fight. Again, the distinction between earth and hell is questionable. The behavior of individuals in these two realms illustrates the interchangeability of evil and good in both spheres, suggesting that conventional distinctions may be artificial in significance. Though earth and hell differ in physical location (clearly Dante can leave hell and return to earth), the morality of both places can be quite similar. The reason this critique is more subtle than those of Montaigne and Boccaccio is that Dante does not explicitly state his disapproval of his own behavior, he simply illustrates it and allows his reader to assess. Some may consider Dante’s aggression to be in accordance with God’s wishes, meaning that Dante’s evil tendencies correspond to God’s relative placement of his victims in Hell. Interpreting this story in light of Francesca’s, however, leads one to believe that Dante is following the pattern of linking two seemingly polar realms of existence and making his reader question the validity of such a moral…

Once Edmond arrives home he has a nice dinner with his soon-to-be wife and father celebrating the marriage and his new job as captain of the ship. Edmond gets arrested in the middle of dinner for treason and brought to a man named J.F. Villefort for questioning. Apparently the letter Edmond hadn't the chance to deliver contained Napoleon's army beach patrol times and locations. To Dantes' most painful surprise, Mondego was the one who had in fact reported Dantes for delivering the letter. The night Dantes was speaking with Napoleon, Mondego had seen the happenings. Along with the help of two accomplices, J.F. Villefort and Phillipe Danglar, Mondego was able to frame Dantes for treason. When Dantes asks why he did it, Mondego responds, "You're the son of a clerk; I'm not supposed to want to be you," (Mondego is the son of a Count). He is then taken to a horrible prison called the Chateau d'If, where he is barely fed, bored to the point of wanting suicide and whipped on every anniversary of his arrival. After a few years of torture, an elder man, Abbe Faria (a priest), digs his way into Edmond's cell. They make a deal that if Edmond helps Faria to dig an escape he will in return, educate Edmond.…
