Latino Masculinities In The Post 9/11 Era
In the article “Latino Masculinities in the Post 9/11 Era” the authors assert that masculinity, in this case male Latinos, are exposed to different types of masculine socialization. In numerous parts of the United States, jardinería, or rural upkeep cultivating, has turned into a gendered word related corner for Latino immigrant men. As stated in the article “Through their hard work cleaning and maintaining other people’s properties, Mexican immigrant gardeners are able to provide for their families, but they are also able to gain the respect and esteem of their coworkers, projecting a masculinity that is honored by their fellow working-class men” (p. 262). It is an unmistakably a working class type of masculinity. These jardineros develop,

In this highly analytical and descriptive article, Anthony C. Ocampo explores and argues the particular way in which gay Latino men negotiate the aspects and boundaries of masculinity. For instance, Ocampo demonstrates that gay Latino men are in fact accepting of their sexual orientation, however, they do not do it in the traditional White gay men stereotypical way. In this traditional or media portrayed sexual orientation, gay men, particularly gay White men, tend to act and appear for feminine, which the group that the author is studying do not connect with this stereotype. In fact, they attempt to appear as highly masculine in order to maintain ties with their families due to the fact that Latino families do not tend to accept their sons…

Stereotypes of all racial ethnicities have been a major issue not only here in the United States but as well globally. Many people tend not to realize that latinos/latinas in the film industry have to settle for roles that have always been associated with their cultural backgrounds. In the “Latinos Beyond the Reel” it not only showed what latinos in the film industry have to deal with on a day to day basis just to have work. In many cases they are forced into these roles because the role of the hero or character that has the happy ever after endings are typically played by predominantly white people. The roles of greaser, villain, house maid, sexy latina, and criminal are all of which have become the norm to latinos for decades. The film does a wonderful job of showing the reverse side of what lations feel and their thoughts towards these stereotypical roles. It just goes to show you how media can influence people's opinions and views on a ethnic race that has stuck for more than a century.…

In chapter 10, I will be focusing on stereotypes on Latinos. Stereotypes are untrue generalizations about categories of people that do not acknowledge individual variation. In other words, stereotypes are untrue statements made up about an individual. An example of a stereotype is all blonds are dumb, all teens are rebels, and all Latinos are in welfare.…

It's a saying in Mexican culture that women must obey men no matter what. Men are the workers and providers for the family, who make all the decisions. While the mother stays at home, does chores and takes care of the kids. The first example I have is my aunt, she does all those things my uncle demands her too. I would go to Tijuana about four times a month for about 5 years and would always see this, my uncle telling his wife and daughters what to do. Till this day many Mexican families still live by the roles. I dislike this idea, and I’m against it. I would like to get my uncle to change and treat women with the respect they deserve. I'm Mexican and I treat women with much respect. Just because you are Mexican doesn’t insinuate that you’re going to miss treat women and act like a macho man towards them. On the other hand I can relate to being influenced as a kid like Soto " For weeks I had drunk Kool-Aid and watched morning reruns of Father Knows Best, Who’s family was so uncomplicated and its routine that I very much wanted to imitate it" (27). He had a brother and sister, Soto’s influence as a kid were TV shows since his father was never…

In Guyland, Michael Kimmel chronicles the journey of young males and the issues they face while trying to exert their masculinity and prove themselves to their peers. Based on interactions among North American males between the ages of 16 and 26, Kimmel has found that at an age where young men had previously prepped for a life of work and committed relationships, they are now living in “Guyland” where they spend their time drinking, playing video games, and having immature relations with women. Kimmel explains that these young men are “frighteningly dependent on peer culture” and “desperate to prove their masculinity in the eyes of other boys.” (30) These young men live in constant fear that they will not measure up to the ideals of masculinity, which are wealth, power, status, strength, and physicality.…

What does it mean to be a “man?” Unfortunately, in American culture this is all too important of a question. According to sociologist, Michael Kimmel, being a (white) man entails having much anger, violence, and entitlement, which he describes further in his book: Angry White Men. These actions are also displayed in the 2007 film, The Departed, which follows the story of two white men on their journey to take on the Irish Mob along with the Massachusetts State Police Department. But, where do these actions come from? In this paper, I will be arguing that men in today’s society act out while trying to fulfill the ideal masculine role that is shaped by American society’s social expectations and social institutions including the family,…

In Rose del Castillo Guilbault, “The Untranslatable Word ‘Macho,” she talks about how in Mexico and America the word macho has different meanings. In Mexico the word macho is portrayed as someone who is manly, responsible, hardworking, and in charge. However, in America the word macho is described in a more negative way such as selfish, loud, abrasive, capable of inflicting pain, and sexually promiscuous. Castillo Guilbault then goes on to share her father’s occurrences and relations to the word macho, and how he represents the real meaning of being macho. It can be summed up that these common stereotypical roles marginalized Latina women. The power of this medium could create more positive roles if only given a true opportunity. The film is not just an escape from reality, it has the power to send messages to audiences everywhere. To a certain degree, U.S. government understood this power and made a good attempt at depicting Latin Americans in a better light, even if their reasons behind weren’t to inspire Latinos of aiming higher in life. All the beautiful women discussed in this paper have experienced the same obstacles, accepting to play these stereotypical roles in hopes they can attain the fame required to gain power and respect in Hollywood.…
