"Amelie" is the most popular French movie in the world, so naturally, I felt compelled to watch it as soon as my French was sufficient enough to understand it. The film consists of a shy girl named Amelie, who devotes her life to doing good deeds for people. Along the way, she falls in love, but she is too shy to act on her passions. There is a happy ending, but her shyness causes her to miss out on many opportunities to get to
know her love interest, and even results in her almost being heartbroken.
When I first watched the film, I felt a strong connection with Amelie; I, too, am very shy, and I could understand how she felt. "Amelie" encouraged me to learn to speak up, even when it's hard to do. At the end of the film, Amelie's relationship works out, because she reached out to her love interest.
