Le Management, voyage au centre des organisations

Henry MINTZBERG Ouvrage personnel.

Through the 1900s a lot of work on management has been presented to the world. The work of writers in management can be categorised in four main approaches: classical, human relations, systems and contingency. Typical classical writers from the early 1900s, main emphases were on the formal organisation and structure. The classical approach can be divided into two subgroups: the bureaucracy and the scientific management. Max Weber is seen as the most important management thinker of bureaucracy within this field (Elizabeth, 2008 78-84). Taylor is seen as the father of scientific management thinking. The classical writers have been criticised for not looking at the employees as individuals with different personality and personal needs. However, their work is still relevant today in the UK. Their structural factors are still used in some organisations.…

In an organisation, Big Five Personality is one of the common practice that are widely accepted by managers to identify their subordinates’ behaviours and characteristics. When the subordinate is identified by one of the Big Five Personality, the managers could then apply certain dedicated strategies, tactics or ways of communication and coordination with that particular subordinate so that to effectively manage them in terms of working as well to achieve the goals and objectives of the department or even the organization. The Big Five is categorized into five categories, i.e. Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability (or Neuroticism (Andrzej and David 2007)) and Openness to Experience (The Commonwealth of Learning 2002). Each category consists with a group of related traits to describe a person’s personality. According to Andrzej A. Huczynski and David A. Buchanan in their book Organizational Behaviour (page 149), they described “They are sets of factors, ‘super traits’, which describe common elements among the sub-factors or traits which cluster together.” (Andrzej and David 2007)…

A number of people whose activities have been set, coordinated and led by their members in order to the attainment of specific objectives or goals is used as defining an organization (Schein 1970). “Theory means here logic and metaphysics” (Timo and Gasparski, 1993, p.3). Different people may have different views on the operations within the organization. Therefore, organization theory is invented and influences what goes on in the organization. Moreover, from the organization theory, it shows variety of perspectives that organization theorists use to study the phenomenon of interest (McAuley, Duberly and Johnson 2007)¹.…
