Ralph showed the most effective leadership qualities out of all the characters in The Lord of the Flies. There were numerous times where Ralph was the first person to step up in a situation to benefit the group and their safety. Ralph’s goal is to get rescued so he sets rules for the group to follow, such as if the conch is blown they are to have a meeting and only the person holding the conch has the right to speak. Most of the other boys are concerned with playing and having fun, but Ralph realizes what he needs to do in order to be rescued and takes initiative.

Sanders holds himself to very high standards and has a clear sense of duty. He treats everyone with respect and seems extremely genuine to myself and others. Sanders would step up and take initiative to do what needs to be done in any circumstance. A great leader listens to their followers and takes their concerns into consideration when making decisions and that’s something Sanders has proven he’s willing to do.
A great leader isn’t only about being the best, the smartest, or the strongest; a great leader looks out for his people. It doesn’t matter how brave or how good under pressure you are if the people you’re leading don’t trust and respect you. Ralph was a great leader because the other children respected his opinions and believed in him as a leader.
