In your own words explain what approaches to learning are and explain the three approaches used in the ASSIST.
The theory that students take different approaches to learning, based on how they perceive the objectives of what they are studying, is known simply as approaches to learning. There are three approaches that students are inclined to take: deep learning approach, strategic learning approach and surface learning approach. Students who take the deep learning approach try and develop an understanding of what they are learning, and focus on making connections with previous information that they have learned. These students are more likely to go beyond what they are required to learn in order to understand …show more content…
My results reflected closely to what I initially thought my learning approaches were, however, I was surprised by my results for the deep approach were higher than the results for the strategic approach, I consider myself to be a more strategic learner. When approaching my studies I usually plan out everything on a piece of paper before I start, I ensure that the environment I’m studying in is free from distractions so that I can concentrate my studying time. My results for the deep approach were higher than both my strategic and surface approach results. When I study I try to find meaning in what I’m learning and I then incorporate what I have learned in my everyday life however, this is only for subjects that are of interest to me. For example when I was studying year 12 psychology we learned the different areas of the brain and to help me recall that information I linked those names with information I already knew, like the occipital lobe I linked with the Romanian word “ochi” which means “eyes” therefore, the occipital lobe is responsible for visual processing. My results for the surface approach were quite accurate as well, with subjects that I am not as interested in I tend to just meet the subjects requirements without truly understanding the
