Chick-Fil-A enjoyed its entrepreneurial beginnings in Atlanta, Georgia by S. Truett Cathy. Cathy is a devout Southern Baptist and prides having the company follow a Christian corporate culture. In fact, the company’s statement of corporate purpose states that Chick-Fil-A works to “glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A” (Chick-fil-A, 2012). Being closed on Sundays, operating debt-free, and investing a percentage of the profits in the community are among the tenets of biblically-based principles that Cathy operates his business under. Recently, Chick-fil-A President, Dan Cathy, took the Christian values of the company to a whole new level by weighing in on the same-sex marriage issue. In an interview with the Baptist Press, Dan Cathy replied “Guilty as charged” when asked about the opposition against Chick-fil-A’s support of the ‘traditional’ family. What Cathy said was not ethically or legally wrong; but, the fact that he said it in implied conjunction with his company’s culture could potentially violate the ethical, and legal, boundaries, such as the Equal Employment Opportunities Act, all businesses have to endeavor under. One alternative to the current system, is putting emphasis on expanding their HR platform already in place and incorporating the employees more in the workings of the restaurant. This can be done through having more crew meetings and RAP sessions. Also they can improve procedures for dealing with grievances and adding things like opinion surveys (2). This type of change would start as a mandate at the corporate level but all implementation would be done by the individual managers of each store. One of the best things about this approach is that it can be started almost immediately. This is because it does not require any extra infrastructure or long deliberation between parties. You can start enforcing more meetings and starting the RAP sessions first. When confronted with change, especially when it is enforced by a business, employees will become emotional. So can the managers who try to administer these changes. One of the many causes of low morale in the workplace is due to employees not feeling that their opinions or inputs matter within the organization. This is largely caused by lack of communication between the employees and management. By involving the people who are affected by the changes you can see if they agree with, or at least understand, the need for them. It also gives them a chance to decide how the changes can or will be managed and can make them feel like part of the process. When the employees see that their opinions are valued in the company, it will surely help in enhancing their productivity.
