It had rained all day making it hard to not fall off the rock, which are almost covered in water now. Ralphy slipped down a rock, fighting to get up, he screamed for Lena saying, “If I don’t make it, just know I’ll always love.” That was all that came out before he was buried in the gallons of water above him. So, with Lena’s father gone her step mother turned on her, forcing her to do all the chores and all the …show more content…

Dorothy Allison creates an extended metaphor through her mother’s gravy in order to relate a safe, comfortable home with the delicious homemade gravy. Allison’s mom, to disguise the “cheap meat” the speaker and her sisters enjoy for dinner, utilizes the “smooth and silky” concoction; so, gravy represents covering misfortunes with savory things in order to maintain the illusion of a splendid household. During the New Years feast, the gravy-laden duck is a showcase that stands among the individual dishes that Allison emphasizes using polysyndenton. The duck smells superb, and unites mother and son by having the son taste the gravy, which he has not done as he is not impressed with previous gravies.…

A Barred Owl portrays a child, afraid of the dark, wind, and noises of the night, and her parent’s comforting her with a little while lie. The girl’s parents convince her that there is nothing to be afraid of, and ease her back to sleep with that small comfort. In lines 10-12, when the narrator illustrates with powerful allusions, the amount of reality that is being hidden from the child, the readers are given an example of how sometimes, knowing the truth can do more damage than good. “The warping night air having brought the boom of an owl’s voice into her darkened room,” (1-2) is an example of the pathetic fallacy Wilbur applies to creatively draw the reader in and convey to the reader what the child fears. The description of the sound of the wind, as if the wind is speaking, lends an eerie tone to the poem at the beginning, which is then suppressed by the parents convincing lie that there is nothing to fear. Although lying can backfire, it can sometimes protect someone from the darker…
