Leonard Pitt's 'Mcbudget' An Insult To Those Living In Poverty
How can leaders of such large companies, who make millions, try and tell their minimum wage employees how to live on so little? Leonard Pitts Jr., the author of “’McBudget’ an insult to those living in poverty” takes his stance on this as he talks about McDonalds controversial ideas and guidelines for how to live on so little. He points out that the employees may only be getting a mere $8.25 per hour and that they may not even be getting the full 40 hours per week of pay. It seems that another point the author was making was how much the CEO of McDonalds actually makes. He includes that according to Wall Street Journal, CEO Don Thompson earned a compensation package of $13.8 million last year, which is exponentially greater than the minimum …show more content…
I’ve worked minimum wage jobs myself and knew I could never afford to live on my own with just that job. While the budget does have some accuracy in it, my issue lies within its flaws. I know from personal experience that you can’t expect for everything to go smoothly and not to have bad days, months, or even years. An unexpected financial burden can come crashing down on you at any moment and I’d have to agree with the author that this budget does not take this risk into account. Whether it be car trouble or accidents, hospitalization or medical care in general, or a birthday where you feel obligated to purchase a gift. You may have had all your bills taken care of, but what’s left after? Maybe all that’s left is only $200 dollars to carry you through the rest of the month. It just doesn’t work and it adds so much stress to your life. On the contrary, it is my firm belief that you cannot live on minimum wage, but you can get yourself into better places with some hard work and dedication. Growing within a company, in this case McDonald’s, is just one way to grow financially. Overall, I feel that living on the “McBudget”, that leaves you with just a couple hundred dollars left over at the end of each month, really isn’t living at

Leonard Pitts criticizes McBudget’s argument by making emphasis on the missing points that were not included on the budget. He considers McDonald’s budget as offensive and controversial. Also, Mr. Leonard believes that it is impossible for a millionaire company advice the poor people to continue surviving to poverty. In his opinion, the poor people cannot live on the totally unrealistic McBudget. According to McBudget the value for health insurance that nowadays everybody must have is 20 dollars only per month. The value of car and house insurance together is 100 dollars per month and expenses like gasoline and food are not included. This is more than unrealistic. It’s unseemly. Pitts recommends McDonald’s CEO to live on minimum wage for six months and prove that his budget can be done. I think it is a great idea.…

Whereas, In Nickel and Dimed on (not) getting by in America, which was our third book review an experiment of living the life of an average person on minimum wage conducted by Barbara Enrenreich. The reason as stated in the initial review was to see if Enrenreich,”could match income to expenses, as the truly poor attempt to do every day “(Nickel and Dimed, 6). In chapter eight of the Doob text labeled under “Poor People Work” one of the factors listed that affected employment opportunities were minimum wage. It basically discussed how the minimum wage is not very beneficial for people living in poverty. (You hear in the news and constantly displayed through different forms of the media that the American Dream is the golden ticket) Well how…

Olsson argues that Wal-Mart employees are underpaid and cannot survive with the paychecks they receive from the corporation. She points out that “[g]iven its staggering size and rapid expansion, Wal-Mart increasingly sets the standard for wages and benefits throughout the U.S. economy.” Olsson quotes Greg Denier who says, “Americans can’t live on a Wal-Mart paycheck,” (Olsson 608). The average paycheck for an hourly worker at Wal-Mart is under $20,000 while the corporation brings in over $6.5 billion in profits. Olsson suggests that the average employee of Wal-Mart struggles living on the hourly wages at Wal-Mart with very few benefits (608). On the other hand, Mallaby expresses that these same Wal-Mart employees that are receiving low wages are receiving Wal-Marts’ every day low prices as a benefit. He accompanies this idea by saying, “Retail workers may take home less pay, but their purchasing power probably still grows thanks to Wal-Mart’s low prices” (Mallaby 622). He agrees that Wal-Mart retail workers do make less money, but also points out the benefit of the low prices that Wal-Mart has to offer on a daily basis and says, “[t]hese gains are especially important to poor and moderate-income families” (Mallaby 621). Wal-Mart is a superstore that drives its prices down lower than its competitors in order to make the best deals on products for their consumers,…

Due to these low paying jobs people are forced to live in cheap hotels or even their car, because they can't afford enough to live. Managers are given more for doing less than someone who is running around and working for hours which are seemed to be unfair to many in a busy workplace. Politizane’s, Wealth Inequality in America argues that the gap of how who is rich, poor and middle class is very uneven in America. In the video they give an example that 4% of the nation's money goes to the 1% of people who happen to be known as rich. I agree with all the following argument due to all of the opportunities given by Canada or America placed unfairly. I strongly agree with Barbara Ehrenreich's piece of Serving in Florida. In the community of Rochester minimum wage is set at $7.75, with a full time job at the end of the year an individual with minimum wage of about 15,080. A car may cost 10,000 and a house is much more. I agree with the fact of people making minimum wage do not have enough to live but I disagree with the fact that they do more than people who are doing other work. In Rochester, Mayo Clinic and IBM happen to be the biggest…

According to Target, they are raising their minimum wage to $11 an hour starting next month in order to compete and fill low wage jobs in a tighter labor market. As Hooker wrote in his book:” Integrity is the result of being consistent with who we are”. On my point of view, Target is just following the market fluctuation. Even before raising their minimum wage to $10 it was because the leader on the market Walmart said that it would increase wages for most of its U.S workers. In an addition, Target promise a wage of $15 an hour within three years. What a shame from such a big company. On my point of view, they can do better than their current vision and achievement. I found the company reaction really unethical even if it is consider legal…

The article titled “Walmart Shut 5 Stores Over Labor Activism” on CBS News describes how Walmart is raising suspicions after closing five stores in the same day for “plumbing” problems. According to the article by authored by Aimee Picchi, all five stores shutdown on the same day, all for the same reason and for the same estimated amount of time. The company estimated the temporary shutdown will extend up to six month and no prior notices were given to the employees, which raises a question about the credibility of the reason for the closure. There are several speculations on why Walmart decided to shut down these stores without providing advance notice to the employees and with all products still in the store. Some argue that there were many employees in these stores who were pro-union and the first to go on strike in 2012.…

(Hanauer)Some people may think that is so crazy. However, the result is great. Seattle is the fastest-growing big city in the America. Washington state is generating small business jobs at a higher rate than any other major state in the nation. And the restaurant business in Seattle is also growing rapidly. The one of the reason is because the fundamental law of capitalism is when workers have more money, businesses have more customers and need more workers. If the employers can pay more money to workers, the workers will have more positive attitude on their work and bring more profits for their company. Nonetheless, there is also someone against to raise the minimum wage. The video named Does the minimum wage hurt workers? Antony Davies says “Minimum wage often hurts those who are most in need of our help.” (Davies, 2012)In this video, he uses an example to explain his opinion. Here are three people work at a same restaurant, Bob, Tom and Derek. The minimum wage of them is $8 per hour. Their income is depending on how many works they done. As the result, you can…

Although many may argue that raising minimum wage should not be done because it’s just enough for people to provide their families many think that it isn’t enough and it needs to be raised. In the American Prospect they talk about how the minimum wage pay is way too low for people to live in a standard living environment. The author of this article is trying to express the fact that getting payed minimum wage is too little and it’s just enough for someone to pay the house bills and it’s not enough for people to get anything for themselves or even for their children. Although many think that it won’t help or benefit the poor it will because it’s giving them many more job opportunities and helping them provide for their families.…

Fast food workers at McDonald’s want their wage to be raised to fifteen dollars an hour. The workers go on strike and protest for these wages and McDonald’s is slowly giving into their preposterous task. President Barack Obama has signed laws to raise wages by 2020, him and seventeen other states have passed laws to raise the wage by that year too. The lowest minimum wages in the country right now are in Georgia and Wyoming at a whopping five dollars and fifteen cents an hour. Let us be honest, a fast food job is not a hard job at all, really the only thing difficult would have to be dealing with the occasional rude customer. Many other minimum wage jobs do not require much skill at all, it is not worth the fifteen dollars that they keep asking for. Many laboring jobs such as an electrician and plumbers make around thirteen dollars an hour including health benefits, with a job that is obviously much harder than flipping burgers to the extent that the two are not nearly comparable. Blue collar workers, such as plumbers, mechanics, or construction workers electricians, have to get down and dirty and do what others would not do to make thirteen an hour. Although, this does not apply to all plumbers and electricians because their wages start to increase. So why should a worker restocking shelves and scanning groceries deserve fifteen dollars an hour? Many workers who are for raising the wage are workers who have to support a family on a decently low…

“My mom worked at McDonald's, and she decided she wanted to make more money, so she got into the management program at McDonald's. And that's how you move up the chain. It's not by demanding that minimum wage is raised; it's by actually acquiring the skills. That's the way that people get ahead in life.” Politian Raul Labrador expresses. According to At Issue from the SIRS data base, in 1938 the Fair Labor Standards Act successfully re-established a national minimum wage after it was battled between 1933 and 1935 by the Supreme Court. Critics of minimum we say it is not sufficient. They believe it should be changed to a living wage standard, which accommodates for economic factors that determine a wage that is able to provide the necessities…

Dept. of Labor”). This equals out to about $15,000 a year for a full-time minimum wage worker and is why it has often been referred to as a “starvation wage.” As of January 1, 2016 the minimum wage in Colorado was raised to $8.31, but still is not enough to support a family on (“Minimum Wage”). For a person who is trying to live off of a minimum wage salary, it can be difficult or even impossible to get out of poverty. There is a noticeable deficit between the amount of money that is earned, and the cost of living. In the article “Can 2 Parents, 2 Kids Live On Minimum Wage?” Fred Imbert states that data from both the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and a number of other sources, “that the average cost of living in the U.S., excluding discretionary spending, is more than $65,000 a year for a family with two adults and two children.” (Imbert, 2015). It is easy to see where this financial discrepancy would cause problems for a family, especially if both parents are working full-time (or even multiple jobs) for a minimum wage paycheck with very few…
