He had taken a liking to birds, specifically how they fly, and often made note of their methods of flying in his notebooks, which he carried around almost all of the time, thus sparking his obsession with the thought of human flight. He had sketched, designed, and manufactured different types of crafts, all with the sole purpose of mimicking the flight patterns of birds and enabling human flight. One of the most major problems da Vinci had to overcome, or in his case, avoid, was the significant difference and limitation of human stamina, endurance, and muscle power compared to that of a bird. Through numerous experiments, he discovered that humans were incapable of flight through the use of raw muscle power and stamina alone.
