Leonardo De Vinci Accomplishments
Leonardo De Vinci was both a scientist, inventor, and an artist. He wanted to know how things worked and would study them. Whatever his findings were he would write them in his journal and/or paint them. He was considered a true “Renaissance man”. At the time many artists like Michelangelo and Donatello had started doing art with a realistic appearance using perspective, light and shadows. They did more practical drawings and sculptures that attempted to reflect true human posture and emotions. Artists were making a 3-D appearance on a 2-D surface. Leonardo De Vinci built off this and was and is famous for his ability to capture such realistic appearances. Two of his most famous paintings are the Mona Lisa and The Last Super. The Mona Lisa
looked so real that scientists and poets wrote about her thoughts that could be causing her smile. The Last Super showed the emotions behind Christ’s disciples as they ate their last meal with him. His use of perspective advanced art in the times and influenced other artists like Raphael Sanzio to create more realistic art.
Fun Fact: Leonardo’s journal of 3,500 pages or pictures and notes is clear and easy to read… if you look at it through a mirror! Nobody knows why he wrote his entire journal backwards!
