Some people fear that if gay people are allowed to marry then it will undermine the very institution of marriage. This however is not true, as the whole concept of marriage is that two people who love each other bond together forever. A large percentage of straight marriages up to 40% end in divorce, but in gay marriages it is as low as 5.4%. Marriage is suppose to be forever, and lower divorce rates means more successful marriages.
Now some people use religion to attack LGBT marriage. Some Christians believe that God created man
and women in the beginning, so it should still be between a man and a woman. However, people have freedom of religion in the United States. This means that you do not have to be a certain religion because someone else thinks you should be. By someone imposing their religious views on someone restricts that person’s unalienable rights. This is not to say that people can not discuss religion, but rather other’s rights should not be compromised because your religion says they do not have rights. As every person has certain unalienable rights one of those rights is marriage.
In summary, the LGBT community has faced discrimination before and still faces discrimination today. One of the areas they are not given fair treatment in is marriage, and it is everyone’s responsibility to support gay marriage and make sure people are treated fairly regardless of their sexual orientation.
