The question investigated in this lab was which drugs have the greatest and least affect on the pulse of the Lumbriculus variegates. Ethanol will cause the worms to become inactive, caffeine will cause the worms to become overactive, and nicotine will cause the worms to become more active. Lumbriculus variegatus is also known as black worm. This small species of worms currently lives in North America and Europe within marshes and ponds. They survive by eating microorganisms and organic, decaying material. This organism of worms makes a good model because they are able to regenerate if their head or tail is removed within two or three weeks. Under a microscope their skin is transparent and their pulsation rates are easy to count.…

Lumbriculus variegatus, or blackworms, are part of the segmented worms called annelids. The body is organized into repeated segments. It has a closed circulatory system, similar to humans because the blood is contained within blood vessels. Two major blood vessels, the ventral and dorsal vessels, run straight from the head to the tail, and several vessels connect the two in the anterior segments. The dorsal blood vessel acts similar to the heart, pumping the blood through wavelike contractions of its muscular walls. Blackworms have bright, red blood because of the presence of a hemoglobin-like pigment, erythrocruorin, which transports oxygen. Because the body wall of the worm is transparent, the blackworm’s pulse is visible as the dorsal…

My friends and I did an experiment on weather mealworms would rather be in darkness or in the light. After observing the mealworm’s behavior we made a hypothesis stating that a mealworm would prefer a dark environment over a light one. During our observations we paid extra close attention to whether or not they would burrow under the oatmeal where it is dark or if they would just stay out it the open where it is light. This would give us hints on their preferences of lighting but there is also the possibility of them only going into the oatmeal to eat. We looked at the long ones, the fat ones, the skinny ones, and the baby ones to help us make our hypothesis.…

To begin this lab we first had to build a viewing chamber to view our worms under the microscope. To make the viewing chamber we had to use about 12 wax like parafilm sheets on a slide. We made sure each of the sheets fit on the slide, and stacked them up to make sure that the worm could not get out. We used a heating plate to melt the parafilm sheets but we had to be careful not to let the slide get to hot because it would burn. Using a razor we had to cut out a trough. This is where the worm would sit in so we could view it under the microscope. Our teacher has prepared us with 3 different molarities of caffeine and 3 different molarities of nicotine. Using a dropper we had to put about 3 drops of caffeine or nicotine on the worm. A new worm is used for each different trial/molarity. At the end of each trial we had to record what happened to the worm and what we saw under the microscope. The old worm was to be disposed in a bowl with everyone else's used worm.…

The two main parasites include ectoparasites, which are those living on the external of the host (mosquitos, ticks) and endoparasites, which live internally in the host (worms). Nematodes or roundworms, cestodes or tapeworms and trematodes or flukes are the three categories in which endoparasites can be divided. Barbers Pole Worm is a nematode which attaches to and causes lesions to the fourth stomach or abomasum of sheep, and obtains nutrients through the blood. Large infestations of the parasite…
