Unit Title: Property Matters
Grade Level: 3rd

NCTM Standards: Grades 3–5 Expectations: In grades 3–5 all students should–
• understand such attributes as length, area, weight, volume, and size of angle and select the appropriate type of unit for measuring each attribute;
• understand the need for measuring with standard units and become familiar with standard units in the customary and metric systems;
• carry out simple unit conversions, such as from centimeters to meters, within a system of measurement;

Science Standards: CONTENT STANDARD B: As a result of the activities in grades K-4, all students should develop an understanding of Properties of objects and materials.
P RO PE RTIES OF OBJECTS AND M AT E R I A L S Objects have many observable properties, including size, weight, shape, color, temperature, and the ability to react with other substances. Those properties can be measured using tools, such as rulers, balances, and thermometers. Objects are made of one or more materials, such as paper, wood, and metal. Objects can be described by the properties of the materials from which they are made, and those properties can be used to separate or sort a group of objects or materials. Materials can exist in different states—solid, liquid, and gas. Some common materials, such as water, can be changed from one state to another by heating or cooling.
Overall Objectives: Students will identify the properties of different objects to determine their weight.
Students will analyze different objects in order to make inferences, predictions, and develop hypothesis.
Day One: Weights and Measurements
Objectives: Students will weigh objects to determine how many ounces are in each one.
