Letter to Congressman
Jessie Taylor your address

August 4th, 2013

Pete Gallego
U. S. Congressman, 23rd District of Texas
El Paso District Office
860 Rio Vista
Socorro, TX 79927

Dear Congressman Gallego,

I would be one of the millions of women who have suffered from domestic violence. Currently I am a constituent of the 23rd District of Texas who would like to thank you for your recent support to pass the Violence Against Women’s Act (VAMA) reauthorization.

Given the primarily Hispanic community here in El Paso, domestic violence is more prevalent and getting out of these abusive relationships is often more difficult because of the cultural values. I would like to urge you to consider the children that are caught in between. Currently there is only “In the best Interest of the child” clause, but even then, women of domestic violence are placed in a dangerous situation of sharing custody with their abuser. While I am not advocating for totally cutting a father out of the picture, I do believe preventive measures need to be put in place to ensure that these kids do not suffer more than they already have.

Specifically, I would like to see changes made that require the abuser (whether they are male or female), to attend parenting and anger management classes, plus they must have supervised visitation for a minimum of a year after the incident, with significant progress made on the part of the abuser to mend both the relationship with their child(ren) and the mother/father of the children. If something is not done to protect these children, some could end up abused themselves or the women/man could end up dead. Stricter laws need to be enforced when it comes to domestic violence especially when it is done repeatedly.

Sincerely,

Jessie Taylor

GW: At the time of the appointment, I was a member of the second Continental Congress and fighting had already broken out in Massachusetts and Congress wanted to raise an army quick, so they unanimously selected me for the task due to my previous participation in the French and Indian War. This was not a position that I wanted or sought out; instead I avoided it at all costs as is seen in my letter to Martha immediately following my appointment to commander-in-chief. Even though I could have declined I believed that doing so would have dishonored me and pained my friends (“Washington to Martha Washington” 1). I did not want to be away from my family nor did I think that I was worthy of the job yet out of a sense of duty for my country and a…

Recently my town has been under crises, the crises of a hurricane. During this time period, multiple problems have occurred that have been unconstitutional. The rights my fellow people as well as I have should not have been abused. I understand that the government must safeguard and limit our rights to protect the safety of its people, however I do not support the actions that have took place in my town. The government must balance the rights and needs of individuals with the needs of the public, but the rights that were taken away from my town’s people were not beneficiary to the needs of the public.…

According to Payne and Wermeling’s research, many victims remain in abusive relationships to avoid retaliation towards them or their children and revictimization of victims occurs at rates as high as 32% within 6 months of the first case of domestic violence (Payne & Wermeling, 2009). Some victims even try to work things out with their attackers by meeting their demands or simply trying to talk out their “problems”, which can lead to further abuse. “The most common reasons for not reporting domestic violence to police are that victims view the incident as a personal or private matter, they fear retaliation from their abuser, and they do not believe that police will do anything about the incident,” according to the Feminist Majority Foundation’s research (FMF,…

    Family Law Reform

The released reports from the AIFS have shown that this new legislation has been harmful to children, with expressed concerns that the Family Law Act is responding to men’s demands for increased time with children, neglecting women and children’s safety. As seen, law reform aims to protect all family members, however balancing the rights of all individuals is not always achievable. Furthermore, the reports have shown that shared parenting has discouraged mothers from reporting family violence concerns due to the emphasis on facilitating the child’s relationship with the father, furthering the abuse. Law reform must ensure that changed procedures do not endanger or disadvantage women and children as separation often place them at a higher risk of family violence. Following domestic violence victim, Andrea Patrick’s death, this led to the Family Law Legislation Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Bill 2011. This legislation paved way for prioritising the victims’ safety over other considerations, including the child’s meaningful relationship with both parents. This however does not ‘roll back’ the shared parenting reform and parenting arrangements made will still be considering relationships with both parents if no signs of abuse is clear, ‘…law needs to amend the legislation so that victims of…

Domestic violence is sadly a fairly common issue today. Many women have reported some type of abuse, sexual or physical, and many have not. Any one commiting these assualts aren't just harming the mother but also the child she carries, there for in a sense there are two victims of these actions and it should be viewed as…

Domestic Abuse is one of the biggest forms of abuse. Psych. Evaluations should be given to the abuser to decide if they are mentally sound at the time of the crime. After the evaluation it should be decided if they should go to a mental hospital if they are mentally sound, a grueling punishment should be given to the abuser. Child abuse is also a large form of abuse. The law enforcement should make sure that the child is participating in counseling. The parents are stripped of their visitation rights, to make sure it never happens again. Lectures should be given in schools so kids know its ok to admit to being abused. They should have groups were victims of abuse can talk about it. No one should have to go through being abused more be done to stop…
