Lewis Thomas Research Paper
Thomas Edison failed. He did not make the light bulb on his first try. Or his second. Or his third. The way people live their lives is based on mistakes. This is the claim made by Lewis Thomas. Thomas is correct- people base their lives on mistakes. Humans, young or old, hate being wrong. It drives people crazy to be incorrect. Without this way of thinking, there would be no improvements in the world. People learn by trial and error. Life is one big trial and error situation. Mistakes are not as important as the step that follows them. Lewis Thomas was completely correct when stating that mistakes are the base of humanity. As previously stated, people do not enjoy being wrong. Maybe, though, being wrong is not such a bad thing. Thomas states,

The same mistake cannot continue to be repeated, however. The next step-the one that works toward fixing the issue- is the most important. Thomas states, “What is needed, for progress to be made, is the move based on error.” It is the next step, the pivot, the 180, the “ah-ha” moment that defines a person. The next move following a mistake is crucial. If that step is in the wrong direction, another mistake is bound to happen. When Edison was creating the light bulb, he took the next step. He found what needed to happen to create change. When terrorists took over four airplanes, the next step was taken. Security was increased dramatically. With every problem, there is a solution. It is important that progress is made toward a goal. Thomas was very knowledgable on process of failing to succeed and understood that the move taken after a mistake is extremely valuable. In conclusion, Lewis Thomas was correct when expressing the reality of mistakes in life. Everything transforms from mistakes to successes. This is partially because people hate to be wrong. It frustrates them and makes them want to improve. By learning from past mistakes, the process of trial and error presents opportunities to achieve. However, achievement cannot be made without utilizing the key step of the process, which is the move taken after the mistake is made.
