The homeless population is often exposed to the harsh elements of the weather and lack access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, and medication. Housing in shelters and transitional homes are not constant and reliable, leaving the homeless population no choice but to spend their days and nights out in the streets. In today’s world, we experience a lot of people that are homeless. Every state has individuals that are living on the street and are lacking resources on shelters, jobs, food pantries, and etc. However, there are many stereotypes about the homeless. There are some that will argue that you chose the life you want to live, but what about the individuals with disabilities without a home because their family did not want them. What about families that previously had a job, got laid off, can not pay their bills, and certain situations brought them to living on the streets? Have you heard the stereotype that the homeless try to just get extra money and that they are not really homeless? As a Social Worker, our job would be leadership, advocating,…

Becoming homeless is hard since one of the basic necessities in life is a home. So this problem can lead people on the street to other major problems, such as drug abuse, assault, and chronic diseases because of the craziness of Denver weather. I think the government needs to listen to what the homeless population needs and to pay attention to their problems. In this way, these people will not become a problem for the city once their basic needs are provided. Creating programs to help them find work and lead them to have a better life, like providing rehab and counseling, will decrease the homeless population in Denver. Providing low-income housing will also assist these people who may have lost their homes due to rent or mortgage spikes. By addressing the root causes of homelessness, the government can decrease the number of homeless people on the streets and the quality of life for all Denver residents will increase as a…

The topic that I would like to focus on for my conceptual paper is Homelessness in the LGBT community. Despite advances that have been made in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered rights, we as a society continue to fail the LGBT community and continue to leave our children homeless and discriminate due to our own inabilities to accept someone for their true selves. This is the root cause of our youth living on the street. “Of the nearly 1.7 million youth homeless in America, up to 40 percent of homeless teens identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and 46% of LGBT teens report family rejection as a significant factor in their homelessness” (Colbenson, K., & Ashe, A 2015). This is a real issue in our society and also one that…

People who have complex life issues related to mental illness and of substance use are the most common people who tend to be homeless. Serious mental illnesses, some caused from substance abuse can disrupt people’s ability to carry out essential aspects of daily life, such as a job, self care and household management. Mental illnesses may also prevent people from forming and maintaining stable relationships or cause people to misinterpret others’ guidance and react in an angry manner. This often results in pushing away caregivers, family, and friends who may be the force keeping that person from becoming homeless.…

The problem of homelessness in America is escalating day by day. Homelessness doesn’t discriminate between races or skin color, although some may be a bit more prevalent. Homeless people range from former veterans, to immigrants, to families struggling to find a solid paying job and a stable lifestyle. Also, although most people relate a homeless person to an underdressed, rugged man, the homeless population now leans towards families. There are more and more homeless families on the streets every day. Homeless families can be an effect of discrimination because of race, a result of violence in a family, or an effect of a physical disability or mental illness.…

Sadly, a large reason why the LGBTQ community are homeless is because family and religion. Mostly, people aren’t very open to transgenders. Transgenders are coming out more and more now, which is a shock to some people. It’s also disappointing to see, since transgenders are just like everybody else. “According to the Family Acceptance Project, LGBTQ youth who come from highly rejecting families are more than eight times as likely to have attempted suicide as LGBTQ peers with little to no family rejection” (Working Together for Homeless LGBTQ Youth 1). Overtime, the traumatic experiences can ruin a person mentally, emotionally, and physically. The risks of getting STIs and engaging in risky sexual activities are also very high for the homeless LGBTQ…

Homelessness is a pressing issue throughout the entire world. It affects people of all ages, genders, and races. The official definition from Google of homeless is “(of a person) without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets.” People who are homeless usually do not choose their homelessness. In fact, many people are pushed into this status due to many different reasons, such as gentrification or just difficulty finding a job. Walking down the Market Street of San Francisco, a bustling city, one would find many homeless begging, walking, or chatting with other homeless. They each have their own story behind their homelessness, and their own hardships. Women, in particular, have different needs and sufferings; they are more prone…
