Giles Corey’s dying words are "More Weight”. In the Crucible Giles becomes a true hero. Throughout the play, Corey changes from a foolish old man, into a hero who courageously dies for his family’s well-being and honor. With just those two words, the character of Giles Corey is defined. Before the with trials begin, Giles Corey is just a silly old man, courageous but not very smart. Although 83 years old, he is ridiculed and blamed for things that go wrong. When the suspicion of witches begins, Corey unthinkingly says something about his wife reading books, and hiding them from him, which was somehow disrupting his prayers.
Throughout the play, we see considerable character development in Giles Corey. Even though John Proctor is the main character of the play, it seems as if Giles is also able to see through the hysteria of the town from the start. The main problem in his character is that he seems to speak before thinking. In act two we see the extent to which Giles can see through the hysteria as he is able to see the reason why his wife is accused. In the final act, when he himself is accused after having been in contempt of the court, he realizes that he would lose his land and property to the state if he were to respond which would leave his sons with no inheritance, and therefore does not speak till the moment he dies.
Giles wanted to die because he couldn’t take the guilt anymore of if being his fault that his wife will be hanged. He tries to accuse Putnam of witchcraft but ends up failing to having evidence. Instead of giving them the name he decides to die under the heavy stones. The reason he didn’t want to confess because that’s what the court wanted. Instead he endured a painful death so that others didnt have to.
Proctor ends up confessing the truth but instead of being let free with his wife he decides to be hanged with people he could of saved. John was being selfish and was not much of a hero as Giles was. Proctor and
