The Right Path “On matters of style, swim with the current, on matters of principle, stand like a rock,” is a quote by, Thomas Jefferson. This quote highly relates to the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, because of the daunting challenges they faced, which made them decide whether to follow what is right or wrong . The Author, vividly explains the tragic story and background of what happened during the Salem Witch Trials. Such as, hanging of innocent people, by an accusation that only the accuser can see, this is called spectral evidence. In the back room of the court, Giles debates with Danforth in a professional manner. Meanwhile Danforth breathes down his neck for the name of the man who told Giles about Mr.Putnam's ideals of accusing people to gain land for himself. Giles very angrily exclaims to Danforth, “[t]he proof is there! I have it from an honest man who heard Putnam say it!” (Miller 96). Giles is later charged with contempt of the court due to him being an honest man. He stuck to his principles rather than straying away and by not endangering the man he had talked to Danforth about, by not giving his name. Accordingly, after Giles is charged with the overthrow of the court. He is then arrested and tortured by the court for the answers. They laid large stones across his chest until he lets out the answer, but he does not, and find himself at his unruly demise. Giles used all his might and mutters his last predominant words, “More Weight” (Miller 135). Giles is tested when he the stones pressed his last breath from his lungs.
