‘Harry Wood’ by John Foulcher, is a poem set in the 1920-30s which explores the idea of change. This poem shows us what happens when change does not occur in a person. Harry throughout the whole poem says the same; harsh, cruel man that was just seeking to survive. He did at some point have social change with, a wife of which he had children with however, as he was an introvert and had his mind set on just surviving and never really “living life”. With Harrys attitude and beliefs never changing it created a negative aspect on his life, with his family leaving him and him living alone. Although throughout his life change did happen around him he never changed with it, if you dont change with the times you get left behind, we see this happened to Harry Wood. Overall the poem is negative change.…

Harry Lavender is both very self-absorbed and self-obsessed. He enjoys highlighting his achievements in relation to the crimes he has committed and how he managed to avoid being prosecuted for his crimes due to police corruption which was at its peak during the 1980’s. Lavenders extracts utilise the techniques of imagery and repetition to further highlight his distinctive voice. The repetition of the pronouns ‘I’ and ‘Me’ signify his focus on himself and his boastful tone, for example ‘they will remember me. At the going down of the city’s son and in the mourning they will remember me…’ (pg 15). This definite statement summarises Lavenders enormous ego and often smug tone that he carries throughout the novel. Lavender prides himself on the fact that he is able to manipulate people into getting his own way, which ultimately leads to his success in the city’s underbelly.…

“The restaurant was shaped like a big bottle, though squatter than a real bottle, and on its cap was a revolving figure of a grinning boy who held a hamburger aloft. One night in mid-summer they ran across, breathless with daring, and right away someone leaned out a car window and invited them over, but it was just a boy from high school they didn’t like. It made them feel good to be able to ignore him. They went up through the maze of parked and cruising cars to the bright-lit fly-infested restaurant, their faces pleased and expectant as if they were entering a sacred building that loomed out of the night to give them what haven and what blessing they yearned for. They sat at the counter and crossed their legs at the ankles, their thin shoulders rigid with excitement, and listened to the music that made everything so good: the music was always in the background like music at a church serve, it was something to depend on.”…

Here, also, were trailing clematis, dropping jasmine, and some rare sweet flowers called butterfly lilies, because their fragile petals resemble butterflies ’wings. But the roses they were loveliest of all. Never have I found in the green houses of the North such heart-satisfying roses as the climbing roses of my southern home. They used to hang in long festoons from our porch, filling the whole air with their fragrance, untainted by any earthy smell; and in the early morning, washed in the dew, they felt so soft, so pure, I could not help wondering if they did not resemble the asphodels of God’s…
