Children screaming, infants sobbing - just one way to describe the arrival of people at Auschwitz five years ago in 1940. Under Adolf Hitler’s demands, innocent families were sent to this concentration camp with only a small amount of hope left. Soon to be child prisoners had no idea they were about to leave their families, some never seeing each other again. They were also clueless of the fact that their lives would be miserable for the next few years.

Some died from not getting the nutrients they need due to receiving only a limited amount of food a week. Infants were not even supplied with milk. What would you think as a parent if your infant was not getting milk or the appropriate food every day? This resulted in dying of starvation.
The lives of handicapped children did not last long at Auschwitz. Hitler did not accept them into his “master race”. In fact, both physically and mentally disabled children were viewed as “useless” through the Nazi’s eyes. Something called the euthanasia program started at the beginning of World War II. It was where “mentally retarded”, physically handicapped, or mentally ill patients were targeted to be killed. After the killings, the bodies of the innocent children were thrown in a giant oven called a crematorium.
The kids at Auschwitz were, for the most part, not in good health conditions. In result of this, about 180 children ranging from the age of 6 months to 14 years old were examined. Doctors found that most of them were suffering from diseases being spread around the camp, 60 percent had a vitamin deficiency and weakening of the organs, and 40 percent had horrible tuberculosis.
