Winnie Tan After my brother and I had completed our exam, we felt happy and wanted to make a trip. So, we threw this suggestion to our parents. My father immediately agreed with it because he also wanted to relax himself. We decided to go to Tanjung Manis because that is the place that we can enjoy ourselves by swimming. On that day, my brother and I woke up early. My mother prepared sandwich, hotdog and chicken wings for us. We put all our gadgets and breakfast into our car. When my father wanted to get the car’s engine running, the car wouldn’t start. We were afraid that the outing might be cancelled. We tried many times. My brother kept his fingers crossed and hoped that the car would not be faulty for long. Finally, the engine roared to life. We were very excited and were talking all the time. We even told jokes while my dad was driving. The scenery across was trees and the hills. My brother tended to do some mischievous face. I used my camera to capture his funny face. Suddenly, my father shouted and we noticed that a cow was crossing the road. We did not know what to do. I could see the oily sweat tingled down my father’s cheek. My father tried to pull his handbrake and stop the car but the brakes were not functioning. Then, my father swerved his car to avoid the running into the animal but my father lost the control he had over the car. The car rammed into a tree. I wanted to know about my family members’ safety but I even couldn’t move my finger. I fainted and I eventually lost consciousness. When I woke up I saw the spinning fan and my mother’s hand on mine. She comforted me and told me that my father and my brother were alright but needed some rest. I felt relieved. I wondered how the cow was on the road. After that I found out that the village was flooded in the past few days and the cows were all

Starting the car with a bright smile on my face. Feeling absolutely confident. I released the hand brake and immediately hit the brakes in attempt to stop the car. My heartbeat began to increase as I started to think what I should do next. As the car stood in the middle of the road I visualized my dad driving the car. Taking three deep breaths I quickly released the brake again and pressed on the clutch and shifted to first. As I cruised in the neighborhood feeling proud I saw a hand in the air, as it got closer I realized it was my dad demanding me to park the car. Though my dad hammered me verbally for stealing the car while he was asleep, I had a smile on my face because that day I had learned how to drive a manual car.…

I was tired and my face was numb; I forgot my face mask at my uncle’s house. I wasn’t in any rush to get home but the wood stove and my comfortable bed was a pleasing thought. The headlight on my snowmobile was only shining about ten feet in the distance when a giant moose stepped out in front of me. I immediately pulled my breaks, but it was too late to avoid contact. I was looking up at the towering moose; ready to fly forward all I could think about is how to survive this situation. My body became calm and everything went quiet. Then all of a sudden the big hooves came crashing down just…

Everything was silent at first, as are most moment’s right before a major storm. People were roaming around, minding their own business and going about their days like nothing was wrong. It was quite clear most were trying to rush to get everything accomplished before the downpour, but no one knew how soon it would happen. Suddenly, as young eyes searched around the area for a treat for being a good boy during the trip, the wind suddenly picked up. Papers and leaves blew about, some flying in front of his face. This caused him to let go of the hand he was holding onto so he could rub at his eyes. He heard a voice, but the wind was too loud for him to hear over.…

I remember getting my first car like it was yesterday; it was a warm August afternoon and I was working an overtime shift at the local McDonald’s restaurant in an attempt to save up money so I could buy my first car. I turned around to hand out a bag of food and saw my mom smiling at me and dangling a set of keys. She told me to meet her out front so I got permission from my manager, who was apparently in on the surprise, and bounded outside. My mom met me there and handed the keys to me pointing at a 1985 Chevrolet Chevette. She told me the car was nothing much to look at but it was paid off and all mine. I was so excited that I took the rest of the day off; which had apparently also been Okayed in advance by my mom with my manager.…

When I looked up Joe and my dad they noticed me eyeing down the car and Joe said, “Ready to take it for a spin?” I nodded and he threw me the keys. As we got in I was so anxious but yet so nervous knowing that I’ve never drove a stick before. However my past knowledge of being good on a manual four-wheeler and dirt bike came along to help. I threw the key in the ignition and with a foot down on the clutch brought the beast to life. With a quick click of my seat belt and a rev of the engine I was ready to take on my challenge of the day.…

“Wait up you two!” my dad exclaimed, but I barely heard him because it seemed like he was a mile away. My brother and I started out on a twisty ride that would eventually turn us upside down. The line was very blunt, and in about 15 minutes, I found myself plopping down in the comfy seat of the ride. The ride started by pointing straight down and proceeded right into the 360 degree turn. After that thrill of a lifetime, we went on the whole day shopping and going on as many thrilling rides as we could, while also looking at all of the amazing other things the park had in store for us. At around 8:30 P.M, just an hour before it closed, my dad decided that it was time to leave and go back home. I found myself staring up at all of the amazing things, and begging my dad if we could come back one…

I slid into the cream pleather bucket seat, strapped the old black seatbelt across my chest, adjusted the mirrors, put one of the two keys for the vehicle into the ignition, stepped on the clutch, turned the key and felt the rumble and shake of the snorting engine. I set the CD face plate in its niche and tuned to my favorite station. I gazed over at my dad thinking, “I did it! I had purchased my car on my own!” I could barely hear my thoughts over the sound of the engine, but my smile stretch from ear to ear. I had proven to my chauvinist dad that I was a financially sufficient woman, and able to afford all the responsibilities of car ownership.…

I awoke to the slamming of the front door, remembering that it was Sunday, my dad's favorite day of the year, the first day of hunting season. I jump out of bed and stumble down the stairs waking everybody else in the house up. Looking out the window I see my dad pull away in his big red pickup truck with the sleeve of his orange hunting jacket hanging out the window. Hoping he brings home dinner, I start to make myself breakfast, I make my dad's favorite; eggs with crispy bacon. As I'm cooking breakfast I think to myself, I wished I had gotten up earlier to say bye to him, or even go out with him. It was a beautiful day to go out hunting and I had never missed the first day of the season before. It was like a tradition he and I had, we would always go out and hunt together. My dad and I had a relationship that not many fathers and daughters had; we really enjoyed spending time together doing things outside that not many people like to do. Losing my train of thought, I look down at the pan of charred eggs and sigh. Nothing went like planned today, I thought.…
