For some, it seems that the Holocaust was in another lifetime, but for others it will be something they will never forget. The Holocaust was a time for fighting. Forced into slave labor and people being killed by the second, this truly was a horrific time. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, his entire family was taken into a concentration camp never to see his mother or sister again. In the movie Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni, Guido and his son Joshua are also taken to a concentration camp and are separated from Dora, Guido’s wife and Joshua’s mother. In the book Elie and his father are keeping each other alive whereas in the movie Joshua is keeping Guido alive.

Guido's love for his son kept Josh alive. When the soldiers took Guido and Joshua away, Guido convinced Josh to believe that the concentration camp was actually a game of who could get the most points. When Guido went off to work in the labor factories, he told Josh to hide and if he wasn't caught then he would win points, Anytime josh had doubts about the situation Guido would lighten the situation with making jokes.
