Through the midst of torture and suffering during the Holocaust, hope can be found through love and family. Two examples of this would be a memoir, Night, by Elie Wiesel and a movie, Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni. While some similarities are noticeable, the differences are astonishing and striking, which gives the audience various experiences.
One point of similarities and differences would be the characters and the relationships that the characters have in both stories, Night and Life is Beautiful. For example, there is a father-son relationship in each of the stories. In Night, the father, Shlomo, and the son, Elie, have a very special bond of love and appreciation toward one another, just like Joshua and Guido do to each other in Life is Beautiful. However, the difference between the two would be that at around the end of the book of Night, Elie's feelings toward his father would change at one period in the story. The reader notices the change when he says “free at last!” (Wiesel 112), yet this change did not happen to Joshua and Guido in Life is Beautiful. For example, both tones were serious at some point. On the other hand in Life is Beautiful, the tone was also light-hearted and humorous. The movie would do this by transitioning from a serious scene to a humorous scene with the occasional help of music. An example of this, would be Guido getting his son’s jacket and a blanket to disguise himself as a woman. In Night, the tone would remain serious and somber. By only having this tone, this would give the reader a more realistic approach toward the Holocaust. For instance, Elie witnesses the hanging of a child who was struggling to keep himself alive (Wiesel
