Life Lessons Learned In James Mcbride's The Color Of Water

Many people learn a lot of life lessons through many ways. Personally, I learn a lot of life lessons through reading books such as The Color of Water by James McBride. In The Color of Water, they give off quite a few life lessons from Ruth and James. One life lesson that I learned while reading The Color of Water is that it doesn’t matter where you come from. Just because you grew up some place in some environment doesn’t mean you are always going to be that way. Ruth grew up Jewish with a lot of strict rules. However, when she left home she started realizing that she doesn’t really believe in the Jewish ways that her family taught her. After a while she grew to become a Christian. She didn’t raise her kids the way her parents did. I personally have some experience with this. I grew up in what some people would call the “ghetto” and most of my family took bad paths and didn’t graduate. Everyone automatically assumes I’m not going to graduate because of how I was raised but I want to graduate. Watching my family struggle gives me motivation to graduate and go to college. A lot of people judge others because of the mistakes they make but that's how you learn. Literally everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect. It’s part of becoming who we are. As we grow up we make mistakes and we change from those mistakes. In The Color of Water, James made a lot of mistakes as a teenager because of his dad dying. He hung out with the wrong people. He skipped school. He did drugs and drank alcohol. but look at him today. He’s a writer, composer and a saxophonist. He’s won awards for his work in musical theater compositions. He has a masters degree in journalism. He learned from his mistakes and changed so he could have a better life and have his family be proud of him.
