Lifeguard Ambitions
As a child, I went through a variety of spontaneous dreams and ambitions when it came to who I wanted to be when I grew up. My impulsive, yet frequent change of mind was based on my sole passion to help people, though I never had a true calling until I became a lifeguard. When I was younger, my Poppy died from a drowning accident. He had Parkinson's Disease and had an at home nurse with him at all times. But this never stopped him from doing what he loved to do. One day he wanted to go for a swim in the family pool in the backyard and the nurse decided she had better things to do than do her job. While she was gone, my Poppy slipped losing his balance and began drowning. When the nurse returned back several minutes later there wasn’t much she could do other than start CPR and wait for the paramedics to arrive. In becoming a lifeguard, I knew that I would never want this to happen to anyone else because the pain of losing someone over an accident that could have easily been prevented is unexplainable.

A few months back I had what started out as a very traumatic experience. A patron jumped off a thirty-five foot ledge into the bowl of a slide, landing head first. After surveying the situation, I activated EAP and ran

In March of 2016 I went through lifeguarding classes, obtaining my certifications in CPR, Rescue Breathing, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and AED. As a lifeguard, my job is to ensure safety of all patrons in my zone. Working as a lifeguard has truly changed me as a person, providing me with helpful skills, and educational experience. I love having the knowledge and ability to save someone's life. It gives me a purpose and fuels my passion. Personally, I feel this job has begun to prepare me for the medical field, ensuring I am good under pressure, providing me with the needed social skills, and the understanding of procedure. Knowing in the end that you saved that person's life is

‘‘The Lifeguard’’ by Mary Morris is a short story that focusses on change over time. A lifeguard accustomed to be the lord of all he surveys and with a big self-esteem, has a rude awakening when he proves deficient in the first aid needed to save a toddler, Becky, on the beach. The author demonstrates that we realise what we have only when a shattering event occurs. At the age of six, I knew that I wanted to find a career where I would be working with kids for the rest of my life. This was a time when my oldest niece was born and was diagnosed with a mild case of down syndrome. When she was an infant, my mother and I would babysit her and I would care for her as if I was a mother figure in her life. I consistently fed her bottles, changed her diapers, rocked her to sleep, and taught her how to read as she grew older. Whatever she needed, I would provide as much as I could. When I transitioned into high school, I found out exactly which career path I wanted to take. I want to go into neonatal nursing because I am very fond of infants. I feel as though I have experience with children who are born with defects…

After I retired out of the Navy, I became a deputy sheriff. I only studied acting to become a better undercover deputy. All I wanted to do was bring down the bad guys. I had no intention of becoming an actor. My thought was, “What would my fellow officers say if they heard that?!” They would never let me live that down. However, the more I studied the ART of acting I realized that it was affecting me inside in a way I couldn't explain, but I needed to know and explore. That's when I decided to pack my truck and tell the sheriff what I decided to do. He replied "I think you're nuts, and I'm sorry to lose you. You're a good officer, but I support your decision.” I climbed into my truck and headed to Hollywood with NO idea of what I was about to get into. Yet I HAD to follow my heart. Now 37 years later, I KNOW it was the right decision, and that passion has just grown throughout the…

When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. You never know how helpless you are until you have a near death experience. One summer, when I was young, my family and I went to a water park. I didn’t know how to swim, but thankfully the majority of the park required no swimming ability. For one of the rides, I wanted to get out of my tube and jump around, but once I climbed out, I immediately sunk to the bottom. I tried to kick back up and just as my legs gave in, a lifeguard climbed in and essentially saved my life. He was my hero and I was very grateful, but something was bothering me. I realized later that it was the fact that I wasn’t able to help myself. It was that moment when I decided to become a lifeguard to save myself and many others.…
