Lighting and Sign
Y11-PHY-2013-T2 Holiday homework
Investigation 4 (3%)

An LED sign is an illuminated sign made with LED, or light-emitting diode, light bulbs which produce little heat and are energy efficient. An LED sign is used in a shop window to attract the attention of potential customers, or as part of a decoration. For this holiday homework, you should complete the following requirements:

1. LED Sign:

Everyone should make an LED sign. A simple one containing a single series circuit is OK. You need to determine the materials to make the sign from and prepare them by yourselves. You can design your own symbol used in different ways.

2. A report:

Make a report to introduce the LED sign you make. The planning and report worksheet is attached, use it to finish you report. If you need to quote information from internet or other books, you must give the source of the information at the end of the report. And the original text from the reference can’t be more than 40%.

3. This task will take about 3% of your score for the 2A2B part (essay: 1%; LED sign: 2%).

4. You can hand in your report in either printed version or handwriting version.

5. Deadline: Tuesday, June 18th. If submitted later, the essay or LED sign will get only 70% of the original score.

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices and are increasingly used for general lighting. Appearing as practical electronic components in 1962, early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light, but modern versions are available across the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths, with very high brightness. When a light-emitting diode is switched on, electrons are able to recombine with holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence, and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy band gap of the semiconductor. An LED is often small in area (less than 1 mm2), and integrated optical components may be used to shape its radiation pattern. LEDs have many advantages over incandescent light sources including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved physical robustness, smaller size, and faster switching. However, LEDs powerful enough for room lighting are relatively expensive, and require more precise current and heat management than compact fluorescent lamp sources of comparable output.Light-emitting diodes are used in applications as diverse as aviation lighting automotive lighting, advertising, general lighting, and traffic signals. LEDs have allowed new text, video displays, and sensors to be developed, while their high switching rates are also useful in advanced communications technology. Infrared LEDs are also used in the remote control units of many commercial products including televisions, DVD players and other domestic appliances. LEDs are also used in seven-segment display.…

In the new exhibit, 12 watt PAR38 20° lamps were utilized. The temperature rating for these lamps was 2700 Kelvin. Although the LED. light output was significantly less than traditional halogen lamps, some screening was still needed. UV filters were not installed because LED lights do not emit any significant levels of ultra-violet light. This simplified the installation process.…

As our generation approaches its peak, technology becomes an art. Even advertisements and communications tend to become digital. The production of light emitting diodes has its use both in industrial and commercial information displays. Hardly comparable against other advertisement mediums like tarpaulin, it is easy to interchange, is cost effective in the long run rather than changing a new Ad, it is programmable, and more likely to caught the attention of viewers. In Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan, engineering department, a great number of students are uncomfortable of the enrollment system being unorganized. Students can hardly wait when other students try not to fall in line and outsmart the former. Some students get bored and create a conversation with other students, not knowing that it is their turn. As an electronic hobbyist and engineering students, we want to design a display system that can help this enrollment problem. By this, students just have to get a priority number and wait for their turn. With large screen display and an audio speakers, the LED dot matrix display system can be useful in calling attentions and also has its other purposes like reminding school activities and schedules. The project consists of 2-D matrix of LED with their cathodes joined in rows and cathodes joined in columns. By controlling the flow of electricity through each row and column pair, it is…

Light Emitting Diodes are great for projects because they provide visual entertainment. LEDs use a special material which emits light when current flows through it. Unlike light bulbs, LEDs never burn out unless their current limit is passed. A current of 0.02 Amps (20 mA) to 0.04 Amps (40 mA) is a good range for LEDs. They have a positive leg and a negative leg just like regular diodes. To find the positive side of an LED, look for a line in the metal inside the LED. It may be difficult to see the line. This line is closest to the positive side of the LED. Another way of finding the positive side is to find a flat spot on the edge of the LED. This flat spot is on the negative side.…
