The characteristics of limited government provides a base for protecting individual rights along with developing the common good, while unlimited government threatens these values. Limited government is a constitutional government, Unlimited governments have both authoritarian and totalitarian systems. The rule of law is an important part of limited government. The rule of law is the legal principle that laws should govern nations, opposed to being governed by unreasonable decisions of individual officials. Political, economic freedoms, and limited governments are similar. Limited government protects political and economic freedom, this maintains and reinforces limited government. Limited government gives the citizens a base for making judgements
about plans to change their own government. It also helps them assess other nations governments. Understanding limited government and its purpose helps citizens understand why it is necessary to maintain the conditions that prevent the government for exceeding its powers. Unlimited governments have no restraints on their power, they also have authoritarian and totalitarian systems. Authoritarian systems are governments that political power is focused on one person, a small group, and the individual and groups are subject to that power. On the other hand totalitarian is when the government attempts to control every part of the individuals lives and tries to control all aspects of private and public lives at all possible times.
