Nervous breakdowns can make completing homework far more of a struggle and also affect the health and life of a student. Believe it or not, kids are doing beyond the recommended amount each night, with no academic benefits. As a matter of fact, the recommended amount is 10 minutes per grade level, meaning first grade gets 10 minutes and senior gets 120 minutes (Worland). In a study done by The National Education Association, they found out that teacher regularly assign homework that exceeds the recommendation. In the paper, the Review of Educational Research, a co-authored name Copper said, it appears that more than two hours of high school homework, and more than 1 ½ hours of middle school homework, have no academic benefit and may produce negative results (Strauss). Above all, doing homework all night can take away a student’s free time and sleep.
For instance, homework reduces the amount of time that children could be spending time with their families. Family time is especially important to a growing child and without it social problems can crop up and a family unit can be compromised by a lack of time being spent together. Lack of time with families can cause conflict between children and parents. In fact, family time is not the only thing homework takes away. Hanging out with friends also decreases because of the massive amount of homework’s students have. Staying up late and doing homework takes away a student’s time to sleep which can leave a student tired and at school they focus less or fall asleep during class. Needless to say, homework is taking away a student’s childhood, which no one
wants. Others must agree that homework can benefit a person by bringing families closer together as students may ask their parents or siblings for help on their homework. The fact is that, students tend to do their work by themselves. Not to mention, many students have parents that doesn’t have the right education to help them.
