Field lineups take place shortly after a commission of a crime and the officers a have a suspect in custody and an eye-witness that is whiling to identify the suspect. The witness goes to the suspect’s location and asked if the person they are viewing is in fact the correct suspect. Depending the witnesses answer the suspect set free or held for further questioning. The suspect is not brought back to the scene of the crime to prevent any damaging prejudices from the witness.
Photographic lineups consist of showing an eyewitness a series of four to six photos of potential suspects. An individual’s appearance in the lineup need to all be similar to the suspects: race, sex, approximate age, and hair color. This type of lineup is very suggestive, so the officers should advise the witness that the suspect my or not be in the lineup.
The physical lineup is the most well know types of lineups due to its involvement in movies and television shows. The physical lineup and photographic lineup are very similar. This lineup consists of four to six individuals and they get to pick their positions against the viewing wall. For identification purposes, subjects in the lineup are asked to speak. United States vs Wade, that a lineup is a critical stage of the proceedings against a defendant and that the defendant has a right to counsel at these lineups.
