The toad represents
an ugly trait in I’m not scared which is evil, this is shown when Ammanitit describes Michele’s father's eye “like toad’s eyes” he communicates to us something about papa character and his moral code. So when Ammanitit compares the adults to toads, we are able to better comprehend the symbolism and meaning behind the toad. If you imagine the posture of a toad, this image can convey how the adults are misshapen both physically and morally. Whereas the children are more active “only we children ventured out into the fiery deserted countryside” (p2) and that they are not yet morally compromised. In comparison to the adults, the children are seen as innocent and naïve. Ammanitit shows their innocence through their actions in the book. Instead of staying inside like “toads” all day, the children “……go cycling [they stay] in the street play football steal, alog or one two three star, or lounged under the shed roof doing nothing”. Ammanitit describes the games the kids play to show the innocence’s of childhood and that they are untainted. When Michele finds the dead boy in the hole, he naively assumes papa will solve the problem “papa will explain it all to me” (p49), this because he didn’t fully understand the situation. Through this, we are able to see the innocence and naivety of Michele as a child. Although a child, Skull is similar to the criminal aspect of the adult world. Skull isn’t as evil as the adults in “I’m not scared “. However, he does imitate certain immoral characteristics that can be seen in the adults. Skull demonstrates his immoral characteristics when deciding to impale a hen “we will use the hen…. they had impaled the hen. It was there on top of a stick. Legs dangling, wings outspread. A swarm of metallized flies buzzed around it and clustered on the eyes, on the blood”. The adults immoral and evil characteristic like skulls can be seen when Michele’s father, threatens to cut Filippo’s ears off “two ears, we’ll cut two”. The other children in ‘’I’m not scared” are not necessarily evil just easily lead. However, Michele seems to have a heighten sense morality, which he proves countless throughout the book. An example of Michele heighten sense of morality, is when Michele realises that Sergio is an extremely dangerous or evil man. Through this, we as the reader are able recognised the evil in the adults. Overall Ammanitit shows the contrasts between the children and the adults in I’m not scared
