The scene was made relevant to readers by changing the scene into a modern context. The modern context is one in which social media is a common commodity.
This modern setting was selected because it is one that all teenagers can relate to. It is also a common form of violence in society that can harm people physically, emotionally and mentally.
Furthermore, this modern setting reinforces the themes because the storyline was manipulated to allow the audience …show more content…
to understand it clearly. This modern adaptation changed the perspective of the scene by transferring it from third person unlimited to first person. This choice was made to enhance the story and make it more engaging. The story omitted the passage where Romeo intervened in an attempt to prevent further fighting to keep continuity and rhythm within the story so as to not lose suspense.
In addition, the character’s names are changed in this modern transformation.
The story also altered the character’s genders so as to make it more relatable for the audience as my research shows that girls are twice as likely to cause and suffer from cyberbullying. These changes were made to further develop the central themes.
Lastly, language and symbolisms were exploited to further develop the dominant themes. An extended metaphor assisted in conveying the themes of violence in society and the consequences of hate as the texts were depicted as bullets to portray how the character was being “wounded” from the cyberbullying. The story also manipulates the line where Mercutio refers to Tybalt as the “King of Cats” by using it in a metaphor at the beginning of the story when the main character calls Tyler a “hissing cat.”
The constant use of onomatopoeia and personification assisted in building tension and rhythm as it created a harsh, jarring mood. Oppositions such as the light of the phone against the dark room and the beauty and ugliness of social media were used to dramatise the story. The story also makes references to the Elizabethan World Views of Wheel of Fortune and Musical Spheres as it includes the words “fate” and “my ears
ringing.”
Overall, by transforming Act 3, Scene 1 into the modern context of social media, the modern reader is able to gain a deeper understanding of the role of violence in society, the consequences of irresponsible or rash actions, and the consequences of hate because of the changes made to characters, symbols, and the manipulation of language.
